I don’t usually think of grocery delivery as a premium credit card perk. Most headline benefits focus on airport lounge access, hotel credits, and statement credits. Weekly grocery runs feel more practical than luxurious, but my Platinum Card® from American Express helps with those just as much as it gets me into the Centurion Lounge.

The Amex Platinum card is a versatile premium card offering thousands of dollars in annual value across travel and lifestyle benefits. One of the benefits I use most consistently is the monthly Walmart+ membership credit for free shipping, fuel discounts, and Paramount+ Essential streaming.

After trying Walmart InHome delivery for a week while multiple family members were sick, I realized I could turn my card’s Walmart+ credit into a major timesaver. I now stack the Walmart+ credit with an annual InHome delivery add-on to get unlimited, tip-free grocery deliveries for about $3 per month.

Here’s how it works and why this seemingly small perk has become one of the most practical ways I offset my card’s annual fee.

American Express Membership Rewards

These are the Amex Platinum card’s benefits, which offer thousands of dollars in value each year:

Some credits require enrollment, so be sure to explore your American Express account to make the most of your card.

How the Walmart+ Credit Works

Those with the Amex Platinum card get a $12.95 monthly credit toward a Walmart+ membership. You can receive the credit by using your Amex Platinum card as the payment method when setting up your Walmart+ membership and selecting monthly billing instead of annual. The membership costs $12.95 per month plus tax, so you’re only responsible for the tax.

I get about $155 in value from the Walmart+ membership benefit, which helps offset the card’s $895 annual fee. It’s one of the few benefits I use every month.

A Walmart+ membership includes:

  • Free shipping with no minimum purchase requirement, except for items that aren’t shipped by Walmart
  • Free grocery delivery with a $35 order minimum
  • Walmart prescription discounts
  • A discount of 10 cents per gallon on fuel at Walmart, Murphy, Exxon, and Mobil stations
  • Scan-and-go checkout access
  • Early access to promotions and events, such as Black Friday deals
  • Free Paramount+ Essential plan subscription
  • Up to 5% Walmart Cash with Walmart+ Travel

Although grocery delivery is included with Walmart+ (with a $35 order minimum), tips are expected for delivery drivers.

Hot Tip:

Like the Amex Platinum card, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express and the American Express® Business Gold Card also offer $12.95 monthly credits for Walmart+.

Why I Upgraded to Walmart+ InHome

I’ve had a Walmart+ membership for a couple of years and used it for a Paramount+ Essential subscription, free shipping, and fuel discounts. It’s been a no-brainer, since my monthly membership fee is offset by the monthly credit from my Amex Platinum card.

I didn’t use Walmart+ for grocery delivery regularly, even though it’s included with a $35 order minimum. The main reason was tipping. Drivers for Walmart+ delivery are typically third-party contractors, and tips are expected. For a $100 grocery order, that’s a $10 to $20 tip.

Paying a delivery tip can be worth it sometimes, like when we have lots of heavy items or a packed schedule. But typically, we’d spend about 20 minutes picking up Walmart online grocery orders instead of paying $10 or more per delivery.

That changed during a week when several family members were sick. No one wanted to leave the house, and we needed groceries — the perfect time to try delivery. At checkout, I noticed I could start a free InHome delivery trial as a Walmart+ member, so I gave it a try.

My order arrived in a temperature-controlled truck with Walmart branding, and the driver wore a Walmart uniform. It felt more structured than a typical gig delivery, and I didn’t have to think about tipping at all. If I had tipped $10 on that sick-day order, I would have already paid more than 3 months of InHome at the annual rate.

How Walmart InHome Delivery Works

With InHome delivery, you can get unlimited deliveries with a $35 order minimum. The difference between InHome and regular Walmart+ grocery deliveries comes down to who delivers your order, where they drop it off, and the time slots for receiving orders.

InHome drivers are Walmart employees paid hourly, and tipping isn’t expected (there’s no option to tip at checkout). That’s a major advantage, since tipping $10 per week would add up to about $40 per month.

Standard Walmart+ deliveries go to your doorstep, but InHome can deliver to your garage or even your kitchen. You can also choose to have groceries placed directly into your refrigerator.

Delivery windows are less precise with InHome. Instead of a 2-hour time slot, you’ll choose between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 2 to 6 p.m. Same-day delivery is available for the 2 to 6 p.m. window if you order before 10 a.m.

InHome costs $7 per month or $40 annually (about $3.33 per month) on top of a Walmart+ membership. Since my Walmart+ membership is covered by my Amex Platinum card except for tax, and I pay annually for my InHome membership, it costs just over $3 per month.

At that price, getting groceries delivered makes far more sense than waiting in a pickup line or tipping $10+ per order. We use it for weekly grocery runs, but it’s also great for last-minute needs. I can place an order the night before and get it delivered in the morning — or even same day in the afternoon.

The delivery upgrade also applies to non-grocery items available at our local Walmart. So while I’m getting milk and bread delivered, I can also get birthday gifts, household essentials, and more.

Hot Tip:

You can choose annual InHome billing for $40 per year ($3.33 per month), or pay a $7 monthly fee. InHome coverage isn’t nationwide, so it’s worth checking availability in your area before signing up.

How Grocery Delivery Helps Us Save Money

I order groceries online every week for pickup from Walmart and H.E.B., and I’ve found we consistently spend less when ordering online than in-store. Ordering online makes it easier to compare prices, avoid impulse purchases, and track a running total before checkout.

Walmart doesn’t charge for online orders, but H.E.B. adds a 3% fee, so we tend to get most items from Walmart and shop at H.E.B. for meat and exclusive specialty items.

What We Save With Walmart InHome Delivery

My Walmart+ monthly membership costs $12.95 plus tax, and nearly all of that is covered by my Amex Platinum card credit. InHome delivery costs $40 annually, or about $3.33 per month.

If we tip around $10 each week for regular Walmart+ delivery, that’s $40 per month, so we save nearly $37 with InHome deliveries. Even with the small fee, we save time on every order, plus the cost of driving to and from the store.

Compared to other grocery delivery services, this setup is one of the cheapest ways to have groceries delivered to your door. Instacart, Amazon Fresh, and Target Shipt all charge membership fees of more than $3 and usually require driver tips.

Hot Tip:

Walmart’s InHome delivery works especially well for families, busy professionals, and anyone who shops at Walmart regularly and wants to avoid tipping. It’s less useful if you’re not a regular Walmart shopper, live in a rural area without coverage, or prefer in-store meat and produce selection.

Final Thoughts

The Amex Platinum card isn’t known as a grocery credit card, but it works that way for me. The Walmart+ credit, combined with an InHome membership, makes everyday life easier with predictable, tip-free grocery delivery for about $3 per month — less than the cost of tipping on a single order.

This benefit alone doesn’t justify the card’s annual fee, but it meaningfully offsets the cost. If you already shop at Walmart and have access to InHome delivery, this is one of the easiest ways to get more value from your Amex Platinum card.
