Is It Worth It?
Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that you’ve received this offer on your Citi Premier® Card, which earns Citi ThankYou Points. We value these points at a rate of 1.6 cents each, which means you’ll be netting a 16% return on your spend — if only for those $250. Still, it’s worth registering your card for the offer and maxing out the bonus, especially since these categories are so simple to obtain.
2,500 bonus points are worth $40 according to our valuations, though it’s possible to redeem them for quite a bit more. While you can’t do much with just 2,500 points, it’s still halfway to a decent night at a hotel in Scandinavia.
How so? Thanks to Citi’s transfer partnership with Choice Privileges, those with the Citi Premier Card or the Citi Prestige® Card (no longer open to new applicants) can transfer their points over to Choice at a 1:2 ratio, meaning 1 Citi ThankYou Point becomes 2 Choice Privileges points.
Hotels in Scandinavia are notoriously expensive, and such is the case for Choice hotels, where room rates for a night hover around $200 in cash, even at more affordable properties like the Clarion Hotel Sign:
You’ll note in the screenshot above, however, that a ~$200 room will cost you just 10,000 points per night. With that favorable transfer ratio, those 2,500 points you earn eating out turn into half a night at this hotel — or just over $100 in value!
Final Thoughts
Ok, this isn’t the groundbreaking deal we’d all hoped it was. A mediocre earning cap at just $250 in spend isn’t much to write home about, but there are ways to maximize the points you redeem. Check your email to see if you’re targeted for this offer — and if you are, don’t forget to register.
