The Business Platinum Card® from American Express comes with a huge list of benefits. But let’s be real: They aren’t useful for everyone.

When you’re evaluating whether or not to apply for a card, just looking at the list of benefits and credits can be overwhelming. But there’s no need to beat yourself over the head over it, because you don’t have to maximize every benefit to make a card, specifically the Amex Business Platinum card, worth it.

In this post, I’ll show you how I evaluate the benefits of the Amex Business Platinum card and why it’s OK not to maximize every single perk.

Overview of the Amex Business Platinum Card

The benefits of the Amex Business Platinum card are plentiful. This card earns 5 points per $1 spent on flights and hotels through AmexTravel.com and 1.5 points per $1 on purchases in select business categories (electronic goods retailers, software and cloud system providers, U.S. shipping services, and U.S. construction material and hardware suppliers) and on purchases of $5,000 or more everywhere else, up to $2 million in purchases per calendar year.

Amex Offers

Get access to Amex Offers to earn bonus points and statement credits on various purchases.

Refer-A-Friend Program

One of the less talked about benefits of Amex cards is the Refer-A-Friend bonus, and these can be lucrative (I was recently targeted for a 35,000-point bonus for each friend I refer through my Amex Business Platinum card).

Pick and Choose the Credits That Work for You

That’s an enormous list of benefits and credits, but thankfully, you don’t have to maximize them all to get enough value to make the Amex Business Platinum card worth it. Even though some of its benefits offer zero value to me. That’s OK, because I get enough value from other credits to make the card worth it.

To evaluate the Amex Business Platinum card, I consider just the benefits that offer the most value to me (these may be different for you).

  • Wireless credits of up to $120 per year
  • Dell credits of up to $400 per year
  • Airline incidental credits of up to $200 per year
  • CLEAR Plus membership of up to $199 per year

Those 4 credits alone offer more value than the $695 annual fee (rates & fees). That means I’m getting enough value to keep the card, so it doesn’t matter that other benefits go unused each year. I don’t have any use for the Indeed or Adobe credits, for example.

That’s also without considering things like airport lounge access, travel insurance, TSA PreCheck or Global Entry fee credit, or referral bonuses. I don’t bother calculating the monetary benefit of those things, since I know I am already getting enough value to justify the annual fee.

Hot Tip:

Check to see if you’re eligible for a huge welcome bonus offer of up to 250,000 points with the Amex Business Platinum. The current public offer is 150,000 points. (This targeted offer was independently researched and may not be available to all applicants.)

Final Thoughts

When I’m evaluating whether or not to keep a credit card long-term, I like to keep it simple. As long as I’m getting good value, I don’t feel the need to maximize every single benefit a card offers. The Amex Business Platinum card has a huge list of benefits. As long as you’re getting enough value from some perks, you don’t need to worry about maximizing every benefit to get lasting value.
