The Business Platinum Card® from American Express is one of the most benefit-packed business cards available, especially when it comes to statement credits that help offset the annual fee.

Many of those credits cover travel expenses, and for most small-business owners, that’s where the real value lies. My 2 favorite travel credits on the Amex Business Platinum card are:

  • Up to $600 annual prepaid hotel credit, which can be used toward bookings with The Hotel Collection (requires a 2-night minimum stay) and Fine Hotels + Resorts
  • Up to $200 in annual Hilton Hotel credits (up to $50 per quarter at eligible Hilton properties worldwide)

On a recent trip to Bangkok, I found a way to stack both credits on the same stay. Here’s how to works and how you can replicate it.

Understanding the Prepaid Hotel and Hilton Credits

Before stacking them, it helps to understand how each credit works.

Prepaid Hotel Credit

The up to $600 prepaid hotel credit can be used toward hotels in American Express’ The Hotel Collection (2-night minimum stay required) and Fine Hotels + Resorts when booked through AmexTravel.com.

This benefit is split into 2 credits, with up to $300 redeemable January through June and another up to $300 redeemable July through December.

To trigger the credit, book your stay through AmexTravel.com and prepay it with your Amex Business Platinum card.

The Hotel Collection and Fine Hotels + Resorts are American Express’ premium hotel programs. Bookings also include additional benefits, such as room upgrades (when available), on-property dining, and a $100 on-property credit.

Plus, these stays usually earn elite nights and points if the hotel you book is part of a major loyalty program, such as Hilton Honors.

Hot Tip:

Most hotels in these programs are high-end and cost more than $300 per night. But if you want to use the credit to cover an entire stay, check out our guides to the best Hotel Collection and Fine Hotels + Resorts stays. There, we highlight hotels usually priced at approximately $300 per night.

Hilton Credit

The Hilton credit is more straightforward.

Each quarter, Amex Business Platinum cardholders receive a $50 statement credit toward any Hilton purchase charged to the card.

This can include:

  • Room charges
  • Dining
  • Spa services
  • Other purchases billed directly by a Hilton property

You must enroll in this benefit via your American Express account, which prompts you to create a Hilton for Business account. That said, once you’re enrolled, you do not need to book Hilton for Business rates to use the statement credit — just make sure you pay the final bill with your Amex Business Platinum card.

How I Stacked Both Credits in Bangkok

If you get creative, you can stack the Amex Business Platinum card’s prepaid hotel and Hilton credits. I did this on a recent Fine Hotels + Resorts stay at the Waldorf Astoria Bangkok.

Here’s how I stacked the credits:

  1. I prepaid my stay through AmexTravel.com using my Amex Business Platinum card, which triggered the $300 prepaid hotel credit.
  2. At check-in, I used the same card for incidentals.

Most Fine Hotels + Resorts stays include a $100 on-property credit that can be used toward dining, spa treatments, and other room charges. During our stay, my wife booked a spa treatment, and we had lunch at the restaurant.

This resulted in approximately $175 in room charges. The $100 credit was applied at checkout, but we still owed $75 for the overage.

Because the Waldorf Astoria is a Hilton property, the remaining $75 charged to my Amex Business Platinum card triggered the $50 quarterly Hilton credit.

The credit was posted a few days later.

Why This Strategy Works

The key is that the prepaid hotel credit applies to the room rate booked through AmexTravel.com. And the Hilton credit applies to eligible charges at a Hilton property.

As long as you prepay the stay through Fine Hotels + Resorts or the Hotel Collection and charge incidentals to your Amex Business Platinum card, you can trigger both credits on the same trip.

And since most Fine Hotels + Resorts stays already include a $100 property credit, the $50 Hilton credit effectively acts as an additional rebate on top of that.

Hot Tip:

You don’t necessarily have to use the same card for both portions. For example, select Hilton co-branded cards also include quarterly Hilton credits, so you can book with your Amex Business Platinum card and pay for incidentals with your Hilton card to trigger the credit.

Final Thoughts

The Amex Business Platinum card is packed with travel benefits, including up to $600 in prepaid hotel credits and up to $200 in Hilton hotel credits per year — and with a little planning, you can use both on the same stay.

Book an eligible Hilton stay with the Amex Business Platinum card’s prepaid hotel credit and then use your card to pay for incidentals. Just remember that you can only trigger the prepaid hotel credit when you book a Fine Hotels + Resorts or Hotel Collection stay through AmexTravel.com. Thankfully, many high-end Hilton properties participate in these programs.
