TAP Air Portugal is the national flag carrier of Portugal. With its strategic headquarters located centrally in the nation’s capital of Lisbon, it is uniquely positioned to transport passengers to the Western European country.

The boutique airline has traditionally been servicing flights to and from former Portuguese territories and colonies. However, with its fast-growing fleet of planes, growing demand for tourism, and global network expansion, TAP Air Portugal has become one of the up-and-coming airlines to watch out for.

Founded in 1945, TAP Air Portugal has been a Star Alliance member since 2005. The airline itself has a number of quirks, such as being fiercely loyal to Airbus and having all its legacy aircraft made by the French manufacturer (though TAP Express, its regional counterpart, operates Embraer and ATR aircraft).

Although its frequent flyer program Miles&Go doesn’t get much publicity, we’ve covered the best ways to redeem TAP Air Portugal miles in great detail. Let’s talk about the best ways to earn TAP Air Portugal miles, also known as Miles&Go miles.

Sign Up for a TAP Air Portugal Miles&Go Account

TAP Air Portugal Miles&Go homepage
TAP Air Portugal’s frequent flyer program is called Miles&Go. Image Credit: TAP Air Portugal

TAP Air Portugal’s loyalty program is known as Miles&Go. The website, while sleek-looking, is prone to constant website refreshes. If you find yourself on one of the subpages and the page suddenly refreshes, don’t be too alarmed.

That being said, if you’re interested in earning Miles&Go miles, you should first create an account. Follow these steps to do so:

  1. Visit TAP Air Portugal’s website.
  2. In the top-right corner, click the button that says Sign up.
  3. Find the column that says TAP Miles&Go Client Account. Scroll down and click Register under the same column.
  4. Fill out the form with your personal information. Scroll down and consent to the Data processing consent section.
  5. Check off the box that says I declare that I have read and I accept the TAP Client Account Terms and Conditions and TAP Miles&Go Program Terms and Conditions.
  6. Click Register.
  7. You may need to confirm your account via an email sent to you. Once that is completed, you can use your new TAP Miles&Go number to earn miles.

Using your TAP Miles&Go number is vital for earning miles in any capacity; if you don’t use your TAP Miles&Go number, there will be no way for TAP to give you miles.

Earn TAP Air Portugal Miles With Credit Cards

In an ideal world, the easiest way to earn miles is to transfer them from rewards partners. Unfortunately, there aren’t going to be as many ways to earn TAP Miles&Go miles as there are from Air France/KLM Flying Blue or United MileagePlus, for example.

1. Marriott Bonvoy Credit Cards

Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1 ratio. You’ll also get a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points transferred to TAP.

This means that if you transfer 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, you’ll earn 25,000 Miles&Go miles when factoring in the additional bonus miles.

There’s very little data on how long it takes to transfer Marriott Bonvoy points to TAP Air Portugal Miles&Go, so please be aware that your points may be in limbo for a while before it gets sent to your Miles&Go account.

3. TAP Miles&Go American Express® Card from Cardless

The TAP Miles&Go Amex card earns 3x Miles&Go miles per $1 spent on TAP flights, 2x Miles&Go miles per $1 spent on hotels, car rentals, and rideshares, and 1 Miles&Go mile per $1 spent on all other purchases.

4. Refer a Friend for Bonus Miles

If you refer someone to an Amex Marriott Bonvoy card, you stand to earn a fantastic referral bonus. You can refer to your Marriott Bonvoy card through email, referral links, or even social media. If the applicant is successfully approved, you should receive your referral bonus in 6 to 8 weeks. The exception to earning bonus points is if you’ve hit the maximum referral bonus amount per year (you can check your referral eligibility).

You can also refer a friend from a Chase Marriott Bonvoy credit card and earn a referral bonus if your friend is approved for either card — it doesn’t have to be the same card you have.

Capital One Venture cardholders can earn bonus miles for each new Capital One cardholder approved through a personal referral link. To find your link, sign in to your account or look in the app for the Refer a Friend tile on the account details page.

5. Non-U.S.-based Credit Cards

If you happen to be based in Portugal, there are 5 choices for co-branded TAP Air Portugal credit cards through which you can earn miles:

  • TAP Business Card
  • TAP Classic Card
  • TAP Fly+ Card
  • TAP Gold Card
  • TAP Platinum Card

You can find out more information about the TAP credit cards offered by Millenium BCP.

Earn Miles Through Travel

Undoubtedly, it’ll be easier to earn Miles&Go miles through travel than it will be at restaurant partners, for example. The reason why is because restaurant partners are located in Portugal and TAP’s travel partners are located all around the world.

Thanks to its strategic membership in the Star Alliance, you can earn tons of miles through many different avenues. Let’s take an in-depth look!

Usually, the most intuitive way to earn airline miles is to fly on the actual airline using a plane ticket. Let’s take a look at how many miles you’ll earn for TAP Air Portugal flights:

When you look at this chart, you’ll notice that instead of fare classes, TAP Air Portugal advertises its fare buckets with names/brands such as Basic and Classic. While it may seem nice, it shows a frustrating lack of transparency when you try to determine the actual fare class.

If, for example, you’re booking through Google Flights or Expedia, you’ll still find a fare class, such as K class. The way to figure out which fare a K class ticket belongs to is to use ExpertFlyer. This is an additional step, but you’ll need to pull up the fare details and cross-reference the details with the information on the TAP fare products page.

There are a few terms and conditions stipulated by TAP Air Portugal on its own flights. These are:

  • For economy flights between Lisbon and Porto, you’ll earn 100 miles on Discount fares, 150 miles on Basic fares, 200 miles on Classic fares, and 250 miles on Plus fares.
  • For business flights between Lisbon and Porto, you’ll earn 300 miles on Executive fares and 150 miles on Top Executive fares.
  • You can’t earn miles for charter flights, coach/train/ship, or for tickets branded as ID/AD/TC/DG/BP.
  • You can usually earn TAP miles on codeshares as long as it has a TP flight number.

Let’s take an example of a connecting flight from Porto (OPO) to Lisbon (LIS) and then to San Francisco (SFO), all on a Z class ticket. Z class tickets correspond to the Executive tier, which means you’ll earn 150% miles on the actual flight distance. Since the total flight distance is 5,681 miles, you’ll earn 150% of 5,681, which is 8,522 Miles&Go miles.

7. Crediting Partner Airlines to Miles&Go

Since TAP Air Portugal is a Star Alliance member, you’ll be able to credit your airline miles to TAP Air Portugal when you fly on United Airlines, All Nippon Airways, and any other partners.

Here’s the comprehensive breakdown for earning structures on the various partner airlines:
