Key Takeaways

  • Lufthansa connects major U.S. cities with Germany using aircraft like the Airbus A350, Boeing 747-8, and Airbus A340, each offering different seating options across economy, premium economy, business, and first class.
  • You only find first class on the Airbus A340-600, A380-800, one of the 2 versions of the Boeing 747, and one of the 3 versions of the A350.
  • Lufthansa is rolling out new premium seats, called Allegris, so you’ll find a mix of newer and older seats in business and first class until this process is complete.

Lufthansa is certainly an airline that people aspire to fly on — especially in first class.

The carrier’s first class is consistently well-executed, including luxury bonuses like cigar lounges, driven tarmac transfers, and sublime customer service.

Lufthansa flies to many U.S. cities on a variety of aircraft. There are variations in the amount of space in economy and premium economy seats, as well as which type of business class you’re flying now that the carrier is rolling out its new Allegris seats.

Here’s a closer look at where Lufthansa flies in the U.S. and the planes it uses.

Seats on Lufthansa A330-300 Planes

On the A330, there’s just 1 layout, with no first class and Lufthansa’s older 2-2-2 layout in business. You’ll also find minimal recline in premium economy and economy. While some of Lufthansa’s planes offer up to 6 inches of recline in economy and 8 in premium economy, this plane offers just 3 inches of recline in economy and 3 to 5 in premium.

Seats on Lufthansa A340-300 Planes

Lufthansa flies the A340-300 and the A340-600. On the A340-300, you won’t find first class but the older 2-2-2 business class, just 3 inches of recline in economy, and between 3 and 5 inches of recline in premium economy — some of the least amount of recline in Lufthansa’s fleet.

There are 2 different layouts on the A340-600, both starting with 8 seats in first class.

In business class, you’ll find the same 2-2-2 layout on both plane types. The key difference is how many business seats there are: 56 versus 44. Notice the 2 additional rows in the rear (smaller) business cabin in this first layout.

The second layout offers more premium economy and economy seats, but the seats are the same in both setups.

Seats on Lufthansa A350-900 Planes

Lufthansa now has 3 different seating layouts on its A350 planes, flying only the A350-900 model of this aircraft. The first layout is the only one with first class, and it also offers the new Allegris business class.

The presence of first class and the unique business-class layout (using a mix of 1-2-1 and 1-1-1 seating) makes this plane easy to identify. The A350 is also more generous for economy passengers (5 inches of recline) and premium economy passengers (7 inches of seat recline) than the planes discussed above. Premium economy passengers also have 39 inches of pitch, giving them more space.

The other 2 layouts on the A350 don’t have first class, and neither has Allegris business class. However, the first model uses a 2-2-2 layout in business class. This model also has 8 inches of recline in premium economy and up to 6 inches (depending on your seat) of recline in economy.

In the third layout, you’ll find a 1-2-1 layout in business class, giving every passenger direct aisle access. There’s also 6 inches of recline for economy passengers and 8 inches for premium economy travelers.

Seats on Lufthansa A380-800 Planes

The A380 is instantly recognizable for its 2 decks and massive size. Lufthansa offers only 1 layout for this plane type. It includes 8 seats in first class at the front of the upper deck.

Business class uses the old seats with a 2-2-2 layout, and these cover most of the upper deck. There are a few economy seats at the rear of the upper deck, though.

The lower deck is mostly economy, though there are premium economy seats at the front of the plane. The A380 offers 6 inches of recline for economy and 9 inches for premium economy — the most generous in the whole fleet.

Seats on Lufthansa B747-400 Planes

The Boeing 747, regardless of model, is recognizable for its upper deck in the front half of the plane. Lufthansa operates both the 747-400 and 747-8I.

The lower deck has a mix of 2-2 (in the narrower nose of the plane) and 2-3-2 arrangements for business class, meaning there are business passengers with a middle seat.

The lower deck of the 747-400 starts with business and then premium economy before ending with economy at the rear. You’ll find 8 inches of recline in premium economy but just 4 in economy.

While premium economy offers a generous 8 inches of recline on this aircraft, economy passengers get just 3 inches of recline — tied for the least in Lufthansa’s fleet.

Seats on Lufthansa B787-9 Planes

Lufthansa only flies 1 variant of the 787 Dreamliner, the -9 model, and it has 2 seating layouts. You won’t find first class in either. However, you will find the new Allegris business class on the first layout.

For economy passengers, the plane with Allegris has 5 inches of recline. It has just 3 inches on the non-Allegris model.

In business class, the plane without Allegris at last has a 1-2-1 layout, giving direct aisle access to all passengers. This isn’t a common setup for Lufthansa.

Best Points To Earn To Fly Lufthansa

Whatever cabin class you plan to fly in, there are solid options for points and miles you can redeem to fly on Lufthansa — including booking business or first class with points. You may be surprised to find out using Lufthansa’s own Miles & More program isn’t always best for booking these flights.

Lufthansa Allegris Business Suite 2

Earning Miles & More miles is tougher than with many other programs because it lacks transfer partners. The only U.S. transfer partner at present is Rove Miles, and you can also earn these miles with the Miles & More® World Elite Mastercard® .

Since Lufthansa is a Star Alliance member, you can also book these flights with partner airline programs. Solid programs to book with include:

It’s worth pointing out that award costs can vary greatly across these program, even for the same flight, so comparing your options is good. Additionally, Lufthansa first class generally isn’t available for award bookings through partner programs more than 2 weeks in advance. If you’re trying to book these seats, last-minute flexibility or booking in advance with Miles & More miles are your only options.

Final Thoughts

There’s significant variation in Lufthansa aircraft that fly to and from the United States.

Lufthansa flies to numerous U.S. airports. With an airline this size, operational demands cause frequent aircraft swaps, which can dramatically affect your experience, depending on which cabin class you’re flying.

Hopefully, this provides you with the information to help plan your next flights on Lufthansa.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best way to book Lufthansa first class seats?

As one of the world’s most aspirational airlines in first class, Lufthansa understandably gets a ton of attention.

If you need access to award availability far in advance, consider using Lufthansa’s own Miles & More frequent flyer program, which typically charges between 91,000 and 107,500 miles between the U.S. and Germany.

Other one-way options include 82,500 ANA Mileage Club miles, 90,000 Aeroplan points, or 140,000 United MileagePlus miles — but without fuel surcharges when booking through United.

Check out our in-depth guide on the best ways to book Lufthansa first class to learn more.

What's the best way to book Lufthansa business class seats?

Now that Lufthansa flights no longer feature in the monthly Miles & More Mileage Bargains, snagging a deal on Lufthansa business class this way isn’t possible. Instead, you need to look at everyday pricing.

Between the U.S. and Germany, expect to pay 60,000 Aeroplan points, around 75,000 Miles & More miles, and 80,000 to 88,000 United MileagePlus miles.

Check out our comprehensive guide on the best ways to book Lufthansa business class.

What's the best way to book Lufthansa economy class seats?

If you can get Miles & More miles, these are your best option for flights between the U.S. and Germany. You can find one-way flights as low as 2,000 miles per person on some dates. Otherwise, look for flights costing 27,500 ANA Mileage Club miles, 35,000 Aeroplan points, 32,500 Singapore KrisFlyer miles, or 44,000 United miles.

Which Lufthansa planes have first class?

While Lufthansa’s fleet has numerous plane types, you’ll only find first class on a minority of them. First class is offered on the Airbus A340-600, A380-800, one of the 2 versions of the Boeing 747 (the 747-8I, not the 747-400), and one of the 3 versions of the A350 (the version with Allegris business class).
