Over the past several weeks, Uber has been slowly rolling out Visa Local Offers to locations all over the country. These offers provide a great value by giving you instant Uber credit when you make purchases at local stores.

Some markets saw a test of Visa Local Offers as early as a few months ago, but it appears to be more widely available now. We want to make sure you know how to find the offers and take advantage of this amazing deal.

How to Sign up

Visa Offers Opt In
Find the option to opt-in for Visa Local Offers in the Settings menu of your Uber App.

To begin using Visa Local Offers, there are 2 things you need to do in your Uber App.

First, you need to go into your payment options and make sure to add at least 1 Visa card. The card you add needs to be the same card that you plan to use for your local purchases, so choose wisely. Of course, you can always add a couple of Visa cards if you need to.

Second, you need to sign up for the actual Visa Local Offers. To do this, open your Uber App, choose Settings from the menu, and scroll down toward the bottom. You will see a Visa logo and a description that says “Join and start earning Uber credits.” Click on this, accept the terms, and you are signed up.

At this point, it will give you an option to search for participating stores. You can take a look, but we will show you where to find that later in the next section too.

Earning Uber Credit

Visa Offers Message
Visa Local Offers can be found if you scroll down to the messages section on the main screen of your Uber App.

Once you are signed up for Visa Local Offers, you can find the available participating locations right from your Uber App home screen. Just scroll down to your messages, and you should see something like the picture above. It will list a couple of options and have a link to click to search all of your local offers.

Visa Offer Options
This is just the first page of the Visa Local Offers for my home area.

You don’t need to select any offers. This is just for informational purposes so you know where to shop. All of these offers are automatically attached to the Visa card you have in your Payment Options. You can see that most of my local offers are restaurants, but I was excited to see a few places we frequent, including Staples.

Uber Credit Alert
After shopping at a participating location, you will get an alert for your Uber credit almost instantly. This was for a few school supplies my son needed.

Using Your Credit

Uber Payment Screen
Uber credits earned through Visa Local Offers will show in the Payment options in your Uber App.

Now that you have earned credits with Visa Local Offers, you need to know how to use them. You can take a look at your total available credits by going into the Payment section of your Uber App. As long as you have credit available, you should be able to use it for the ride you need.

Uber Credits On
Make sure to turn your credits on by clicking on the little slider bar before requesting your ride.

Unfortunately, using your Uber credit is not as easy as just requesting a ride. For some reason, Uber makes you select the credits as a payment option every time you take a ride.

Once you enter your destination on the App, you will have the option to switch your payment near the bottom of the screen. Click on this, scroll down, and you will see something similar to the picture above. The little circle slider will be to the left until you click on it, meaning your credits will not be used.

This seems to reset for every ride. So if you have credits available, make sure you are turning this option to use them.

Final Thoughts

Uber is a great on-demand ride service that we use almost every time we travel. In addition, I regularly use Uber to get into and out of Washington, D.C. for happy hours and events.

Many of the local restaurants I eat at are a part of the new Visa Local Offers, and a few retailers I shop at are on the list too. If I can get 10% Uber credit back at all of these places, that’s a huge money saver for me.

It remains to be seen how long this program will stay active. I find it hard to believe they can maintain this level of discount indefinitely, especially when I see some of the retailers on the list.

In fact, Uber has even set all the offers to expire at the end of the month. They did all appear to reset at the beginning of this month, but they could just as easily pull offers instead of renewing.

If you want to take advantage of Visa Local Offers, I recommend signing up as soon as you can. Get as much credit as possible, reduce your transportation costs, and together we can hope this program stays around for a long time!
