When you open the Uber app and punch in the destination you need to get to, the app quickly calculates how much this ride will cost you based on a variety of factors. However, it doesn’t provide much clarity as to how Uber arrives at the price it quoted you.

In this guide, we will break down how much Uber costs per mile, all of the fees associated with Uber rides, and some card recommendations to help you get as much value as possible from your Uber rides.

How Much Does Uber Cost per Mile?

Many factors impact how much your Uber ride will cost, including the ride’s location, distance, time of day, and which car type you select.

For instance, an Uber Black ride from Midtown Manhattan to JFK during rush hour traffic is likely to be significantly more expensive than a shorter UberX ride in Manhattan that you take to grab a drink with friends.

Most estimates claim that an Uber ride will cost between $1 and $2 per mile on average. However, this is just one aspect of how Uber prices your ride and does not include any other fees. Let’s take a look at what those fees are.

Guide to Uber Fees

If you’ve ever looked at your receipt after completing an Uber ride, you’ve likely noticed that there are quite a few fees that can make up the overall price you pay for your ride. Here are the most common fees:

  • Booking Fee: This is a flat fee that is added to each ride to cover operational costs. The fee scales with the distance of the trip, but the minimum booking fee you can be charged is $1 and the maximum is $10.
  • Service Fee: The service fee is the fee drivers pay Uber, and it varies from trip to trip. It’s the difference between what a rider pays and what a driver earns on a trip, excluding tips, tolls, and certain fees, taxes, and surcharges. However, it is not necessarily charged on every trip.
  • Surge Pricing: During periods of high demand, Uber applies a multiplier to the standard rate that can make a given ride significantly pricier than what might normally be charged on the same route.
  • Tolls and Surcharges: Riders are responsible for paying any tolls or surcharges that are incurred during the ride. These fees can vary depending on the city and route.
  • Local Fees: Depending on where you live, additional fees might be added based on state regulations. For instance, a New York State Black Car Fund fee is added to all Uber rides within New York.
  • Airport Fee: Uber may charge an additional fee for rides to or from certain airports.
  • Wait Time Fee: In some locations, a per-minute wait time fee is added based on how long your driver had to wait for you to get into the car after arriving at your pickup location.
  • Cancellation Fees: If you cancel more than 2 minutes after your UberX request has been accepted, or if your driver cancels after waiting at least 5 minutes at your pickup location, you will be charged a $10 cancellation fee.
  • Sales Tax: A set percentage added to your ride based on the local sales tax rate that your ride took place in.
  • Cleaning Fee: Riders are responsible for damage to the interior or exterior of a vehicle caused by incidents such as vomiting or food spills. Cleaning fees are assessed and charged according to the extent of the damage.

Hot Tip: You can use the Uber price estimator tool to get an idea of how much your ride would cost.

The Capital One Savor card is arguably the best credit card for Uber purchases because it offers an industry-leading 10% cash-back on Uber rides and Uber Eats purchases, plus a complimentary Uber One membership through November 14, 2024, which usually costs $9.99 per month. Uber One membership perks include 5% off Uber rides, access to top-rated drivers, an unlimited $0 delivery fee on Uber eats orders, and more.

Put simply, no other credit card is going to offer nearly as much cash-back on your Uber purchases as the Capital One Savor card, and it also offers 4% cash-back on dining, entertainment, and popular streaming services, plus 3% cash-back at grocery stores, making it a very well-round cash-back earner.=

Hot Tip: Check to see if you’re eligible for a welcome bonus offer of up to 125k (or 150k) points with the Amex Platinum. The current public offer is 80,000 points. (This targeted offer was independently researched and may not be available to all applicants.)

You might be surprised to see the Amex Platinum card included here as it does not offer a bonus spending category for Uber, so you’ll earn just 1x points on these purchases.

What it does offer, though, is up to $200 annually in Uber Cash that can be used for both Uber and Uber Eats orders. The $200 credit is dealt out in $15 monthly increments, plus $35 in December, so if you use the rideshare service or get food delivery at least once per month you should have no issue maximizing its full value.

Beyond that, the Amex Platinum card is one of the most benefits-rich cards available by offering the best airport lounge access out of any card, an annual hotel and airline incidental credit, annual CLEAR Plus credit, annual digital entertainment credit, and much more.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, the cost of an Uber ride per mile will vary based on a number of factors, including the type of ride you select, the location and distance of the ride, and the time of day. Additionally, you’ll want to keep certain fees in mind that might impact the price of your ride, like tolls, local fees, taxes, airport fees, and more.

That said, if you find yourself regularly spending money with Uber, then you should consider adding a credit card to your wallet to help maximize each of these purchases.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 20-minute Uber cost?

Uber prices are not based by the minute, but rather the price is determined by the type of ride you select, the location and distance of the ride, the time of day the ride is booked, and any applicable fees.

How can you get an Uber price estimate?

Uber offers a price estimator tool that allows you to plug in most routes and receive a reasonably close estimate of what the ride will cost you based on the ride type you select. Similarly, you can also receive a price estimate directly through the Uber app.

Does Uber take credit cards?

Yes, the primary way to pay for an Uber is with a credit card through the app. Further, many credit cards offer Uber Cash as a card benefit or include rideshare services as a bonus spending category.

How can you check the Uber price before ordering?

When you input your pickup and drop off location on the Uber app, the app will immediately quote you a price for the ride. If the price sounds reasonable to you, then you can then confirm the ride and the nearest available driver will head to your pick up location.

Can I pay for an Uber with cash?

No, you cannot pay for your Uber with cash as the transaction is handled entirely through the app, so you’ll need to enter a credit card or debit card into the app to pay. You could, however, offer a tip to your driver in cash, if you’d like.
