Is The Business Platinum Card® from American Express worth it? For business owners who travel often and use the hotel and airline credits, the Amex Business Platinum card earns back its $895 annual fee (rates & fees) through a fraction of its statement credits. For those who won’t use those credits, it is hard to justify.

Quick Overview: Is the Amex Business Platinum Card Worth It?

The Amex Business Platinum card charges an $895 annual fee, and that fee is measured against nearly $2,500 in annual statement credits (Source: American Express). Using about $895 of those credits covers the fee, so the break-even point sits at a little over a third of the advertised value.

The card is worth it for frequent business travelers who use the prepaid hotel, airline incidental fee, and Hilton for Business credits, and it’s hard to justify for those who won’t. A realistic user nets closer to $1,100 to $1,500 in maximized credits, not the full $2,399, because several credits are merchant-specific. Many of those credits require enrollment and expire on a quarterly or semiannual schedule, so unused value doesn’t roll over.

* Dell carries a second tier: A further $1,000 credit posts after $5,000 in annual Dell purchases, but only the $150 base counts toward the total above (Source: American Express).

The Global Entry (up to $120) or TSA PreCheck (up to $85) credit is excluded because it posts once every 4 years (Global Entry) or 4 1/2 (TSA PreCheck), not annually.

Spending $250,000 on the card in a year unlocks another up to $3,600 in credits (up to $2,400 in One AP credits and up to $1,200 in flight credits), which are also excluded here.

A concrete example makes things clearer. A traveler who uses the prepaid hotel credit (up to $600), the airline incidental fee credit (up to $200), and the Hilton for Business credit (up to $200) achieves up to $1,000, minus the $895 fee, for a net gain of about $105 before anything else.

On top of that, there are additional benefits that aren’t easy to quantify and aren’t included in the math: Unlimited Centurion Lounge and Priority Pass™ access after enrollment, Hilton and Marriott Gold status after enrollment, Leaders Club Sterling status after enrollment, and the 35% Pay With Points rebate on certain flights (up to 1,000,000 points back per year). Those extend the value but are worth counting separately, since their dollar value depends entirely on how you travel.

Who the Amex Business Platinum Is (And Isn’t) Worth It For

Worth It if You Travel for Business Often

If you book at least a few paid hotel nights and fly regularly, the card clears its fee before the extra benefits count. The threshold is roughly $600 in hotel and $200 in airline credits, plus the $200 Hilton credit or lounge access. That combination puts you at $1,000-plus in received credits against the $895 fee, a net positive of $100 to $600 before status and the rebate.

Borderline if Your Spend Is Software, Not Travel

If your business spends on Dell, Adobe, or Indeed but you rarely fly, the card can still work, though it takes effort. The threshold here is using enough merchant credits to clear $895: Dell up to $150, Indeed up to $360, Adobe up to $250, ChatGPT up to $300, and wireless up to $120. Hit most of those and you net positive, but each requires enrollment and real spend at that specific merchant, so the margin is thin.

Not Worth It if You Rarely Travel

If you fly once or twice a year and don’t spend at the credit merchants, the fee overshadows the value. The threshold is simple: If you can’t realistically use more than about $700 in credits, you lose money. Lounge access and elite hotel status carry little weight for someone who isn’t in airports or hotels, so the net result is negative by a few hundred dollars.

If You Already Have the Personal Amex Platinum Card

This is a worth-it question, not a card comparison. If you already hold the personal Platinum Card® from American Express, most of the headline value is duplicated. Lounge access, the up to $600 hotel credit, the up to $200 airline fee credit, CLEAR+, Global Entry/TSA PreCheck, Hilton, Leaders Club, and Marriott status, and rental car status all appear on both cards (some may require enrollment). Framed plainly, an existing personal Amex Platinum cardholder pays a second, identical $895 annual fee (rates & fees) against up to $1,380 in genuinely new credits, of which up to $1,060 is merchant-specific software spend (Dell, Indeed, Adobe, ChatGPT).

If your business doesn’t already spend at those merchants, the incremental credits drop to about $320, nowhere near the fee, and the lounge access that sells the card is worth $0 to you. The incremental case rests on the business-only items: Dell (up to $150), Indeed (up to $360), Adobe (up to $250), ChatGPT Business (up to $300), wireless (up to $120), and the Hilton for Business credit (up to $200), plus the 35% Pay With Points rebate and 2x points on purchases of $5,000 or more. For the full breakdown, see the Amex Business Platinum card vs. Amex Platinum card comparison.

The Catch: Use-It-or-Lose-It Credits

The credits arrive in monthly, quarterly, and semiannual pieces, and each piece expires if unused, so the realistic value for many owners lands below the up to $2,399 headline. The 2 items that most often go unused are Indeed (up to $360) and Adobe (up to $250). Skip both and your ceiling drops by up to $610.

If It’s Not Worth It: Downgrade and Alternative Options

These are 2 main options. Downgrading stays within Amex as a product change, with no new application, and your Membership Rewards points are preserved. Switching to another issuer means a new application, a credit inquiry, and the points don’t carry over. Downgrade paths include the American Express® Business Gold Card or The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express for a $0-annual-fee option (rates & fees) that keeps you in the Membership Rewards ecosystem.

If you want to leave Amex, the main alternatives are the Capital One Venture X Business Card and the Sapphire Reserve for Business℠.

Hot Tip:

Final Thoughts

The Amex Business Platinum card‘s value depends entirely on which credits your business will actually use. The honest test is to total the credits you would realistically benefit from against the $895 fee, using the math table above. If that total clears $895, the card pays for itself; if it doesn’t, downgrade or look elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Amex Business Platinum card worth the $895 fee?

It depends on credit usage. As the math section shows, using roughly $895 of the card’s up to $2,399 in annual statement credits covers the fee, and frequent travelers typically clear that with the prepaid hotel, airline incidental fee, and Hilton for Business credits alone.

How much do the Amex Business Platinum card credits actually total?

The annual statement credits total about $2,399 across 9 categories. That figure excludes the Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit (which posts every few years) and the credits unlocked only after $250,000 in annual spend.

Do the Amex Business Platinum card credits expire if you don't use them?

Yes. Most credits post in monthly, quarterly, or semiannual increments, and each increment expires if unused. Credits do not roll over, so realistic annual value for most cardholders is often lower than the $2,399 total.

Is the Amex Business Platinum card worth it if you already have the personal Amex Platinum card?

Much of the value is duplicated across both cards. As the duplicate-value section explains, a personal Amex Platinum cardholder faces about $1,380 in new credits, of which roughly $320 applies if the business doesn’t spend at Dell, Indeed, Adobe, or ChatGPT.

Is the Amex Business Platinum card worth it just for the lounge access?

For most people, no. Lounge access is valuable to frequent flyers, but the $895 fee is easier to justify by combining lounge use with the prepaid hotel, airline incidental fee, and Hilton for Business credits rather than relying on lounges alone.

Is the Amex Business Platinum card worth it if you don't travel much?

Generally not. Without regular flights and hotel stays, the largest credits go unused and lounge access carries little value, so the fee tends to overshadow the credits a low-travel owner can maximize.

Can you downgrade the Amex Business Platinum card if it's not worth it?

Yes. You can request a product change to a lower-fee or no-annual-fee Amex business card, such as the Amex Business Gold card or Amex Blue Business Plus card, without a new application, and your Membership Rewards points are preserved.
