One of the best ways to boost your points balance is to take advantage of large welcome offers, but there is another overlooked option available with a handful of cards: referral bonuses.

American Express has a limited-time referral program to help cardholders — especially those who dine out often — maximize their card suggestions to friends and family. Here’s how you can take advantage.

Earn an Additional 10x Points (or 10%) Back on Dining

Starting February 22 through May 22, 2024, Amex is running a limited-time promotion to encourage cardholders to refer others.

By referring friends and family, eligible cardmembers earn an additional 10x rewards or 10% cash back per dollar spent at restaurants worldwide for 3 months on up to $25,000 in purchases. That’s on any restaurant worldwide, from neighborhood eateries to international hot spots. When a friend applies for a new account using your referral link, you’ll be eligible for a bonus after they’re approved.

The most straightforward way to find your referral link is in your American Express online account.

They’ll still be eligible for a welcome bonus offer as well, making it a win-win for you and your friend. The list of eligible cards includes:

Hot Tip:

Before applying through a referral offer, you may also want to take a look to see if there are better, targeted offers through a tool like CardMatch.

For instance, if you refer a friend to the Amex Gold card, you’ll earn 14x points on restaurants worldwide for 3 months (up to $25,000). Usually, you’d earn 4x on restaurant purchases, and with this offer, you’d earn an additional 10x Membership Rewards points.

In addition, those who apply for the Amex Gold card through this referral offer can earn the standard welcome bonus and an additional 20% back in statement credits after using their card at restaurants worldwide, up to $50 in 3 months.

Final Thoughts

In addition to earning a referral bonus for the credit card you hold, you can typically earn a bonus for any card in the same family of products. This is a great opportunity to earn a unique referral bonus, especially if you dine out often.
