Since opening my first American Express card in 2014, I’ve redeemed millions of Membership Rewards points, largely for airfare. I’ve been on the road a lot this year, so naturally, much of my travel has been funded with Membership Rewards points.

American Express Membership Rewards points are my favorite as they’re relatively easy to earn, and the program has an extensive list of transfer partners, ranging from Air Canada Aeroplan to Avianca LifeMiles.

In 2025, I’ve booked everything from business class flights abroad to domestic work trips, consistently exceeding our 2.2 cents per point valuation. Let’s review what I’ve booked this year and the cards I use to earn Membership Rewards points with my regular spending.

Booking Domestic Flights With Pay With Points Rebate

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express offers a 35% Pay With Points rebate. As the name implies, this feature gives you a 35% rebate on select airfare booked through AmexTravel.com. This effectively gives you 1.54 cents per point in value.

While that’s less than our Membership Rewards valuation of 2.2 cents per point, it’s a consistent value that doesn’t require spending time hunting for award space. You can use the Pay With Points rebate in 2 ways on AmexTravel.com:

  • Any flight booked with your chosen airline: Choose a preferred airline on your Amex Business Platinum account each year that matches the carrier you select for your airline incidental fee credit (enrollment required). Any class of service booked on your chosen airline qualifies for the rebate, including basic economy, economy, premium economy, business, and first.
  • A business or first class flight with any airline through September 18, 2025: Once the benefit is removed, you’ll only get the Pay With Points rebate on your 1 airline of choice.

I picked Delta Air Lines as my airline and have used it to book several one-way tickets for my wife and me this year. This includes flights to Chicago for Thanksgiving, a trip to Las Vegas, and a flight home from Spokane, Washington, for a wedding. I also booked a JetBlue Mint business class flight as the last leg of my wife’s and my honeymoon earlier this year.

The prices below are after the rebate posted back to my Membership Rewards account.

  • JetBlue Mint business class, 2 passengers, SFOJFK: 114,049 points
  • Delta Main Cabin, 1 passenger, ORDLGA: 14,937 points
  • Delta Main Cabin, 1 passenger, JFK-LAS: 12,901 points
  • Delta Main Cabin, 1 passenger, LGA-ORD: 8,027 points
  • Delta Main Cabin, 2 passengers, GEG-ATL-LGA: 38,893 points
  • Delta Main Cabin, 1 passenger, LGA-ORD: 8,352 points

Totaled up, I’ve redeemed 197,159 points through AmexTravel.com and saved $3,036.24 in cash.

Booking Domestic Flights With Transfer Partners

In 2025, I booked a handful of American Airlines flights through Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan. It was possible to transfer Membership Rewards points to HawaiianMiles, and onward to Mileage Plan, though this transfer partnership ended on June 30, 2025.

But for the sake of laying out how many points I’ve redeemed, here’s a look at what I booked in 2025:

  • New York (LGA) to Dallas (DFW), 1 passenger, first class: 15,000 miles
  • Dallas (DFW) to Fort Lauderdale (FLL), 1 passenger, economy: 7,500 miles
  • Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Chicago (ORD), 1 passenger, economy: 7,500 miles
  • New York (JFK) to Los Angeles (LAX), 2 passengers, business class: 70,000 miles
  • Los Angeles (LAX) to New York (JFK), 1 passenger, business class: 35,000 miles

I was glad to take advantage of this loophole while it lasted, as I spent 127,500 Membership Rewards points through HawaiianMiles and Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan for domestic flights. Since this is no longer possible, I’ll have to transfer Bilt Rewards points to Alaska.

Hot Tip:

Membership Rewards points no longer transfer to Mileage Plan via HawaiianMiles, but you can still book Oneworld award tickets with your points. Some additional Amex transfer partners to consider include the British Airways Club and Cathay Pacific Asia Miles.

International First and Business Class Flights

I’ve also redeemed a ton of Membership Rewards points for international business class tickets. So far in 2025, I’ve redeemed them for a few trips to Europe and part of a still-in-planning trip to Asia next January.

Each redemption is in first or business class, which yielded a huge value from my points.

1. Business Trip to Rome

Earlier this year, I flew to Rome for a quick business trip. Since I’m self-employed, I’m usually responsible for covering my airfare to meetings, conferences, and other events. I often rely on points and miles to keep my travel costs low.

I had initially booked an economy ticket from New York (JFK) to Rome (FCO) via Paris (CDG) with Air France for 12,000 Virgin Atlantic Flying Club miles, plus taxes and fees. However, 48 hours before departure, I saw that Lufthansa first-class award space had opened, so I booked it for 100,000 Membership Rewards points, which I transferred to Air Canada Aeroplan. Taxes and fees were just under $101.

This was my second time flying Lufthansa first class, and the top-notch service didn’t disappoint. Since I was connecting to Italy, I enjoyed the Lufthansa First Class Terminal for a few hours. This is a dedicated part of Frankfurt Airport for first-class passengers, with amenities like upgraded food, workspaces, and a car transfer to your aircraft.

I booked my flight home in Air France business class using Air France-KLM Flying Blue miles. I took advantage of a monthly Promo Reward that discounted flights from Europe to Ottawa (YOW) to 37,500 miles plus $280.80 in taxes and fees. I transferred Membership Rewards to book the award ticket and booked a cheap United Airlines cash ticket for the flight home from Ottawa to Newark (EWR).

All in all, the round-trip business class ticket to Italy cost 137,500 Membership Rewards points plus $380.81 in taxes and fees.

2. Solo Trip to London and Prague

Last month, I flew to a meeting in London and then to Prague to visit family. I booked my flight to London by transferring Membership Rewards points to HawaiianMiles and then to Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan. (As mentioned earlier, this is no longer an option.)

I redeemed just 45,000 miles and paid $18.90 for an Aer Lingus flight to London (LHR) on the way to mainland Europe. This itinerary took me from New York (JFK) to Shannon (SNN) for a brief connection before flying onward to London.

After a few days in London, I transferred 7,500 Membership Rewards points to Aeroplan and booked an economy award ticket on Lufthansa from London (LCY) to Prague (PRG) via Frankfurt (FRA). This itinerary charged $116.15 in taxes and fees, but the convenience of London City Airport was unmatched.

I booked my Air France business class return trip by transferring Membership Rewards points to Flying Blue. This time, I flew from Prague to New York (JFK) via Paris (CDG) for 60,000 miles and $326.41 in taxes and fees.

In total, my flights from New York to London, London to Prague, and back home cost 112,500 Membership Rewards points and $461.46 in taxes and fees.

3. Aer Lingus Business Class to Belgium

I’m flying to Belgium in August for a quick trip with a friend. I paid cash for my return ticket but booked my outbound journey in Aer Lingus business class for 45,000 Alaska miles and $18.90 in taxes and fees. I’m flying from Chicago (ORD) to Brussels (BRU) via Dublin (DUB).

Again, this was booked by transferring Membership Rewards to HawaiianMiles and onward to Alaska Mileage Plan, which is no longer an option.

4. Business Class Home From Malaysia

My wife and I are traveling to Penang, Malaysia, next January, and we used Membership Rewards points to check something off our bucket list. We’re flying the world’s longest flight, Singapore Airlines from Singapore (SIN) to New York (JFK), on the way home.

I booked us business class tickets on this flight, plus a connection from Penang (PEN), by transferring a mixture of Membership Rewards and Capital One miles to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer.

Unfortunately, it was expensive. Saver tickets weren’t available, so I booked us Advantage tickets. Advantage tickets include some perks — for example, the ability to add a stopover and no fee to change — but at a higher cost. We paid 143,500 KrisFlyer miles and $149.56 per person. We’re hoping to rebook into a Saver fare if award space opens closer to departure.

To save Membership Rewards points, I transferred 145,00 Capital One miles and 142,000 Membership Rewards points to book these tickets. This is no small sum of points to pay for a single flight, but it sure beats a paid economy ticket.

How I Earned 700K+ Amex Membership Rewards Points

I have a collection of business and personal American Express cards that I use for my everyday personal and business spending. On the personal side, I primarily use the American Express® Gold Card to rack up Membership Rewards points when I go out to eat and buy groceries.

American Express Membership Rewards

Final Thoughts

2025 has been a big travel year for me, and many of the flights I’ve booked would be unattainable without Membership Rewards points. I redeemed just over 761,000 Membership Rewards points this year and saved thousands of dollars along the way.

I earned these points through regular business and personal spending, earning welcome offers, shopping through the Rakuten shopping portal, and wedding expenses. I try my best to maximize each purchase by putting it on the right card, like using the Amex Gold card to pay for groceries and the Amex Platinum card to pay for flights.

It’s worth considering an American Express Membership Rewards-earning card even if you’re not on the road as much as I am. Even a single welcome offer could be enough to fund an international business class ticket or a handful of domestic flights.
