Marriott is expanding its presence in the extended-stay market, announcing a new brand called StudioRes.

Here’s what you need to know!

Extended-Stay Brand Coming to U.S. and Canada

StudioRes, previously known as Project MidX Studios, will be a “digital-first” brand offering features such as pay-and-go retail and digital check-in. The brand will focus on budget-conscious travelers looking for a long-term stay — 20 nights or more, Marriott says — who want to pay around $80 per night.

The hotel chain has released renderings of what a StudioRes room and communal space would look like. True to an extended-stay offering, the rooms are of ample size and are pet-friendly. Shared areas include a covered porch, guest laundry, fitness center, and communal table.

StudioRes will be located in the U.S. and Canada, and there’s no word on whether the brand will expand to other markets. Marriott says it expects to break ground on 3 StudioRes locations this year and plans to open its first hotels in late 2024 or early 2025. StudioRes will also participate in the Marriott Bonvoy program, meaning travelers can earn and redeem points at the hotels.

This isn’t Marriott’s first foray into the extended-stay market. The chain has several longer-stay options in its Residence Inn by Marriott, Element by Westin, TownePlace Suites by Marriott, Marriott Executive Apartments, and Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy brands. Additionally, the chain recently acquired the City Express chain, another extended-stay brand based in Latin America.

“As consumers look for new, flexible accommodation solutions, we are thrilled to announce our plans to launch an affordable midscale extended stay offering to meet the needs of guests seeking long-term comforts at a moderate price point,” said Marriott International President and CEO Anthony Capuano.

Other hotel chains have also thrown their hats into the extended-stay ring amid major competition from companies such as Airbnb, VRBO, and Sonder.

Hyatt recently announced that it would open Hyatt Studios — a new extended-stay brand offering large rooms, kitchens, and convenient amenities for long-term travelers — as early as 2024. And Hilton recently announced a new extended-stay brand dubbed Project H3.

Final Thoughts

Like other hotel chains, Marriott is jumping into the extended-stay market with a brand catered to long-term travelers in the U.S. and Canada. While we don’t yet know much about the project, it will undoubtedly be popular for travelers looking for a longer stay and to also earn points!
