When most people earn a big welcome bonus offer, they immediately start dreaming about flying business class to Europe or Asia. I’d be lying if I said those redemption ideas didn’t cross my mind, too.

However, if I had 175,000 Membership Rewards points today, stretching them across multiple trips a little closer to home can make a lot of sense. That’s because one welcome offer can go surprisingly far for domestic travel.

If you’ve received a welcome offer for as high as 175,000 Membership Rewards points with the Platinum Card® from American Express after meeting minimum spending requirements, these are the domestic award sweet spots I’d be looking at first.

Amex Platinum Card Overview

At Upgraded Points, we value Amex Membership Rewards at 2.2 cents per point. If you’re targeted for the maximum 175,000-point welcome offer on the Amex Platinum card, these points are worth up to $3,850.

Of course, the welcome offer is what grabs everyone’s attention, but the Amex Platinum card keeps its long-term spot in my wallet for other reasons.

However, the real reason this card is so powerful is its over 20 airline and hotel transfer partners — mostly at a 1:1 ratio unless otherwise noted. Programs like Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, Air Canada Aeroplan, and Singapore KrisFlyer have award sweet spots, allowing you to stretch your Membership Rewards points much further.

1. Escape to Hawaii Starting at Just 15K Points

As I live in South Florida, Hawaii isn’t exactly around the corner. Instead of trying to fly all the way there in one shot, I often like to spend a few days on the West Coast before continuing on to the islands.

When it’s time to head to paradise, one of my favorite options is transferring Membership Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio to Air Canada Aeroplan.

I can book United flights to Hawaii with Aeroplan points starting at 15,000 points one-way from the West Coast, making it an excellent value for routes that can otherwise be pretty expensive.

Hot Tip:

Aeroplan is just one of several useful programs for booking cheap award flights to Hawaii. For more, check out our guide to the best ways to fly to Hawaii with points and miles, where we compare the top airline loyalty programs for reaching the islands.

2. Fly to Puerto Rico From 14K Points

Most people don’t think of Australia-based Qantas and its Frequent Flyer loyalty program for U.S. domestic travel, but it’s actually one of my favorites for booking American Airlines flights. Although American Express Membership Rewards don’t transfer directly to American Airlines, this is another great example when moving points over to Amex’s foreign transfer partners is a good idea.

Since Qantas Frequent Flyer partners with American Express Membership Rewards, I can transfer my points and redeem them for American Airlines flights to Puerto Rico. Because Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, I don’t even need a passport.

Thankfully, Qantas Frequent Flyer is a 1:1 transfer partner. Flights to San Juan (SJU) start at just 13,800 Qantas points plus about $29 in taxes and fees each way in economy.

Even better, you can turn 175,000 Membership Rewards points to book 6 round-trip tickets to Puerto Rico, making it an outstanding way to turn this generous welcome offer into a memorable family or group vacation.

3. Fly JetBlue Mint Across the Country for Under 50,000 Points

I love a good lie-flat seat when flying across the Atlantic or Pacific, but JetBlue TrueBlue offers its signature Mint lie-flat seats within the U.S. for as little as 49,900 points one-way.

I could book a round-trip Mint ticket, even with the 1:0.8 transfer ratio to TrueBlue, and still have plenty of points left over.

Personally, JetBlue Mint is my favorite way to fly lie-flat across the U.S. The spacious suites, excellent food and drinks, and consistently friendly service make it feel much closer to an international business class experience than a domestic flight.

Even better, Mint is available on a growing number of transcontinental routes, including Fort Lauderdale (FLL), New York (JFK), and Boston (BOS) to Los Angeles (LAX), as well as flights to San Francisco (SFO), San Diego (SAN), Las Vegas (LAS), Phoenix (PHX), and Seattle (SEA) on certain routes.

4. Book Cheap AA Flights From 13.5K Points

One way I’ve been redeeming Membership Rewards points for years is by transferring them to British Airways Avios at a 1:1 ratio to book American Airlines flights. Because British Airways and American Airlines are both in the Oneworld alliance, I can use Avios to book any American Airlines flight with award space. In most cases, it’s a better deal to book these tickets with Avios than with American AAdvantage miles, since British Airways operates a distance-based award chart.

My favorite way to redeem Avios is to book domestic U.S. award flights under 650 miles, which cost 13,500 Avios in economy class. Flights between 651 and 1,151 miles cost 18,000 Avios, and flights between 1,152 and 2,000 miles cost 20,000 Avios. All domestic awards charge $5.60 in taxes and fees.

For example, I can book a flight from Charlotte (CLT) to Orlando (MCO) for 13,500 Membership Rewards points and minimal taxes and fees.

The sweet spot are flights under 650 miles, where I pay just 13,500 Avios. Image Credit: British Airways

Flights to Orlando can be expensive during many times of the year, especially around school breaks and other peak periods for Disney World and the area’s theme parks. One-way fares can climb above $300, giving you more than 3.3 cents per point in value. American Airlines award availability can be found by searching on the British Airways website.

5. Book Northeast Flights for Just 5K Points

Most people think of Air France-KLM Flying Blue for award flights to Paris, Amsterdam, and the rest of Europe. I do too, but it’s also one of my favorite programs for booking domestic U.S. flights. Because Flying Blue partners with Delta, you can often book the exact same Delta flight for fewer miles than Delta SkyMiles charges.

One of my favorite sweet spots is the busy Northeast corridor between New York and Boston. These flights are popular with both business and leisure travelers, which means cash fares can add up quickly, especially if I’m booking close to departure. By transferring just 5,000 Membership Rewards points at a 1:1 rate to Flying Blue, I can book a one-way Delta flight between the 2 cities.

I love using Flying Blue miles for short, domestic U.S. flights. Image Credit: Air France

To put that into perspective, 175,000 points are enough for 35 one-way flights between New York and Boston. That’s an incredible amount of travel from a single card bonus offer and could help you save thousands of dollars compared to paying cash throughout the year.

Hot Tip:

Don’t rule out flying between Boston and New York. While Amtrak fares can start around $29, last-minute tickets often exceed $100, and the trip takes 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours depending on the train. If you can book the same route for just 5,000 Flying Blue miles, flying can be the better value.

6. Book Flights to Alaska From 11K Points

One redemption I’ve been considering for a while is using Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points to book Delta Air Lines flights to Alaska. One of my favorite sweet spots is a flight from Seattle (SEA) to Juneau (JNU), which starts at just 11,000 Virgin points plus $5.60 in taxes and fees.

Virgin Alaska Award
Alaska flights can be pretty expensive. This is an excellent way to offset that cost. Image Credit: Virgin Atlantic

I haven’t made this trip yet, but an Alaska cruise is high on my travel bucket list, and this is almost certainly how I’d book the flight.

Princess and Celebrity cruise ship in Alaska
I’m eyeing an Alaska Cruise by 2028 and will surely redeem Virgin points for Delta flights to Alaska. Image Credit: Katie Corrigan Seemann

I’d simply position myself with a flight to Seattle using Amex Membership Rewards points or one of the many points and miles currencies I collect, then transfer my Amex Membership Rewards points to Virgin Flying Club at a 1:1 rate to take advantage of this award sweet spot.

7. Keep an Eye on Delta Flash Sales for Deals Starting at 7K Miles

Delta SkyMiles often get a bad rap because award prices can be unpredictable, but there are times when transferring Membership Rewards points to Delta at a 1:1 rate makes a lot of sense. Every so often, Delta launches an impressive SkyMiles flash sale with deals like one-way flights to Europe for 12,000 miles or domestic round-trip tickets starting at 7,000 miles.

Delta award prices flash sale
Look out for Delta Flash Sales before transferring Amex points to Delta. Image Credit: Delta Air Lines

At that domestic rate, 175,000 points could cover as many as 25 round-trip flights. These promotions may not be available every day, but when a Delta flash sale appears, it can be one of the best times to transfer Amex points and book these deals dirt cheap.

8. Or… Save Them for a Trip That Really Matters

One of the reasons I love Membership Rewards points is that they don’t expire as long as I keep at least 1 American Express card that earns them. That means I never feel pressured to instantly use my points just because I earned a big welcome bonus offer.

If I had 175,000 points today, I’d probably save some of them for a trip that really matters. I have friends all over the country — from New York to Los Angeles and plenty of places in between — and I love knowing I can book a flight to see them whenever the opportunity comes up.

Visitng LA to see friends
One of my favorite ways to use Amex points is to fly across the country and catch up with friends. Image Credit: Juan Ruiz

As much as I am obsessed with redeeming points for outsize value, I don’t feel the need to redeem them right away. Sometimes the best use of Membership Rewards points is saving them until the right opportunity comes along, whether that’s a family visit, a reunion with friends, or another trip that’s worth taking.

Final Thoughts

When people see a welcome offer as high as 175,000 Membership Rewards points on the Amex Platinum card, it’s easy to start dreaming about business-class pods and bucket-list trips halfway around the world. Those redemptions are tempting, but they aren’t the only way to get incredible value.

Personally, I’d use those points for trips I’m already planning to take. Whether it’s visiting family, taking my family to Hawaii or Alaska, or booking a quick domestic flight for a weekend getaway, I’d rather use my points for travel I know I’ll enjoy than save them for a “perfect” redemption that may never happen.
