Handling more than 84 million passengers in 2025, London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is the U.K.’s busiest airport and a major global hub. International services dominate the airport, accounting for more than 87% of all flights.

LHR is laid out as a multiterminal airport spread across the western edge of London, rather than a single connected complex. Road access, parking, hotels, and rail stations are distributed around each terminal, making Heathrow feel more like a collection of smaller airports. This layout supports Heathrow’s heavy long-haul and international traffic, but also means passengers must check their departure terminal before arriving at the airport.

Airlines Operating From LHR

Most airlines at London Heathrow operate from a single terminal, which helps keep check-in, security, and connections simple. However, some airlines use more than one terminal for specific routes, partners, or operational reasons, so it is always best to confirm your departure terminal on your ticket before traveling.

LHR Airport Terminals

LHR has 4 passenger terminals, 3 of which are between the airport’s northern and southern runways. Because of this layout, road journeys between terminals can be lengthy, often requiring vehicles to loop around the airport’s perimeter. Fortunately, interterminal connections are supported by several free rail services, including the London Underground.

The terminals are not connected airside as a single network, so passengers changing terminals must usually exit security and use landside transport.

Terminals 2 and 3 are the only terminals directly connected via a landside walkway, meaning travelers must exit the secure area to move between them.

Terminal 2

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 2
Terminal 2. Image Credit: London Heathrow Airport

Terminal 2 is on the eastern side of the airport, between the 2 runways and adjacent to Terminal 3. Also known as the Queen’s Terminal, it primarily serves Star Alliance airlines and some long-haul carriers. Terminals 2 and 3 share a train station for access to the other 2 terminals or for transport into London.

Level 5: Check-in

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 2 check in

Level 5 has curbside access for vehicles collecting or dropping off passengers. Elevated walkways lead to check-in. Airline counters are divided into 4 zones, signposted at the building entrance.

Once checked in, proceed to the security checkpoint in the center of the check-in area.

Level 5: Departures

After security screening, proceed to the level 5 departure lounge, which has a selection of shops and restaurants. The Lufthansa and Aer Lingus lounges are also on this level.

Level 4: A Gates

Terminal 2B is a satellite concourse serving gates B31 through B42. To reach this concourse, walk through the underground tunnel past gate A16. There are a few shops, restaurants, and a United Club.

Level 1: Arrivals

Arriving passengers proceed through border control on level 1, then exit via baggage claim and customs. There are a few shops, cafes, and the United Arrivals Lounge in the arrivals hall.

Ground Floor: Ground Transportation

Ground transportation is on the lower level outside the terminal and can be reached via escalators from level 1 arrivals. On-site terminal parking is in the same structure, spanning all levels between ground transportation and the departures drop-off zone.

From ground transportation, descend 1 level via the escalator to reach the pedestrian walkway serving the terminals 2 and 3 train station. This same underground walkway also provides access to Terminal 3.

LHR Terminal 3

The arrivals hall includes a few shops and cafés. Onward transportation, including buses and taxis, is on the same level outside the terminal. Elevators and escalators at the north end of the terminal take passengers to level -3, where they can access trains to London.

Interterminal Transport

Landside Transport Before Security

Passengers traveling onward on separate tickets may need to change terminals outside the secure area. Heathrow offers several interterminal transfer options, with routes depending on which terminals you are traveling between.

Train

London Heathrow Airport Interterminal Transport
Terminal transfers. Image Credit: London Heathrow Airport

The map above outlines the free travel routes around the airport. Train connections between terminals are shown in dark blue and purple, while the dotted line indicates out-of-hours bus service.

Passengers can move between terminals using the Elizabeth Line, London Underground (Piccadilly Line), or Heathrow Express (between terminals 2 and 3 and Terminal 5), all of which are free for interterminal travel. Access requires an interterminal transfer ticket or tapping in with a contactless payment or Oyster card, which only tracks entry and exit.

Heathrow Airport Central station serves terminals 2 and 3. Terminals 4 and 5 each have their own stations. Travel between Heathrow Central and terminals 4 or 5 typically takes around 20 minutes, including walking and waiting.

Bus

Between 3 and 5 a.m., the free H30 out-of-hours bus service operates every 20 minutes between terminals.

Buses operate to and from:

  • Hatton Cross
  • Terminal 4: bus stops 10 or 11
  • Terminal 5: bus stop 20
  • Heathrow Central Bus Station (terminals 2 and 3): bus stop 20

Walking

Terminals 2 and 3 are next to each other and linked by a signposted pedestrian walkway. Walking takes around 10 minutes and includes moving walkways.

The pedestrian underpass is on level -1, separate from the London Underground, with elevators and escalators at both terminals to access the walkway.

You can’t walk between other terminals at London Heathrow.

Airside Transport After Security

Bus

Connecting passengers can usually remain airside when transferring to their onward departure terminal. After arriving at LHR, follow the signs for flight connections, where shuttle buses operate between terminals, typically departing every 10 minutes.

Security and Customs at LHR

Terminals 2, 3, and 4 have 1 main security checkpoint with multiple lanes for processing. Terminal 5 has 2 security checkpoints, at the north and south ends of the terminal. Many lanes support Fast Track and family travel, and wait times can vary. Each terminal has smaller security checkpoints airside specifically for connecting passengers.

Security checkpoints open around 4 a.m. and close at last departure. See live security wait times on Heathrow’s website.

Fast Track

Heathrow Airport does not offer TSA PreCheck, which is limited to U.S. airports. Heathrow provides its own Fast Track security lanes in each terminal, accessible through airline status, premium tickets, or paid access. Fast Track is open daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

eGates

Heathrow Airport uses automated eGates at passport control, allowing eligible travelers with biometric passports to clear immigration quickly without speaking to a border officer. Eligible users are British citizens or nationals of an EU country, Australia, Canada, Iceland, Japan, Liechtenstein, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, or the U.S.

See current immigration wait times on Heathrow’s website.
