The Best Credit Cards for Gas Purchases [Rewards and Cash-Back]

Chase Freedom - Earn 5% cash back at gas stations

Gas prices change all the time, and filling up at the pump can definitely add up. Why not earn bonus points for something that most of us have to purchase on a regular basis?

Last year it was estimated that Americans spent almost $2,000 on gas purchases. That can add up to a lot of travel rewards or cash-back!

There are plenty of credit cards that offer category spending bonuses for specific merchant types. Luckily, gas is a common bonus category for many different travel rewards credit cards and cash-back credit cards — not just gas reward cards.

We want to make sure you know which credit card will give you the best travel rewards and cash-back for each dollar you spend at the pump.

If you’re only getting your basic standard reward earning rate on your gas purchases (like 1 point per dollar) then this guide is for you!

Do I Need a Gas Station-Specific Credit Card?

We all probably see advertisements for gas station-specific credit cards when we fill up at the pump. These cards can offer some enticing rewards, but often they limit you to that specific gas station.

Limiting yourself to a specific gas station to earn extra rewards isn’t necessary, since many travel reward and cash-back cards offer bonus points for any gas purchase.

Gas station-specific credit card reward programs can also be much more restricting than other reward programs.

Some gas station-specific credit cards will offer you an immediate discount at the pump. Others will offer a rewards discount on a future purchase at that specific gas station, which could expire sooner than you think.

Travel rewards and cash-back credit cards can give you the freedom to be able to fill up without limiting yourself to a specific gas station brand, thus increasing the flexibility of how you redeem your rewards.

Bottom Line: You do not need a gas station-specific credit card to earn rewards. In fact, doing so could limit your ability to earn other, more flexible rewards.

Here we’ll break it down to match your point earning style, with the best personal and small business credit cards to earn travel rewards and cash-back for gas purchases.

Best Credit Cards for Extra Travel Rewards for Gas Purchases

We love travel rewards credit cards, and we love when we earn extra bonus points on purchases we make regularly, like gas.

Here are our favorite credit cards to earn extra points on gas purchases:

Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express
  • $200 statement credit after you spend $1,000 in purchases on your new Card within the first 3 months.
  • Earn 3% cash back at US gas stations and select department stores
  • 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $6,000 per year in purchases, then 1%). Terms Apply.
  • Annual fee: $95

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is basically an upgraded version of the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express. It offers an identical rewards structure in the form of reward dollars that can be redeemed as a statement credit.

The major difference is an increase in the amount of cash-back you earn in the same special bonus categories, but it does have a $95 annual fee.

This card earns an unlimited 3% cash-back on purchases made at U.S. gas stations and select U.S. department stores.

Hot Tip: You can’t earn cash-back on jet fuel purchases, but American Express does list exactly what U.S. department stores qualify for the extra 3% cash-back.

It also earns 6% cash-back on up to $6,000 in purchases per year (then 1%) at U.S. supermarkets. All other purchases earn the standard 1% cash-back reward.

You can also start earning cash-back even before your card arrives! American Express provides an immediate credit card number when you are instantly approved, which can be used for digital purchases (including mobile payments and online purchases).

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express earns more cash-back on bonus categories compared to the Blue Cash Everyday® Card (like the unlimited 3% cash-back on U.S. gas purchases), but it also comes with a $95 annual fee.

This card also offers the usual benefits and protections that American Express provides to safeguard your purchases.

FAQ

Do I need a gas station-specific credit card to earn rewards?

No. In fact, some gas station-specific credit cards limit your ability to maximize your earning potential since you are usually limited to that specific gas station. Other travel rewards and cash-back credit cards offer bonus points on a wider range of gas stations.

Can I earn unlimited rewards on gas purchases?

It depends. Some credit cards will cap the number of bonus points you will get for spending at gas stations. For example, some cards will only offer bonus points on the first $5,000 in gas purchases in a calendar year or anniversary year. Other cards do offer unlimited rewards.

Are bonus rewards on gas purchases instant?

Most of the time the savings from the bonus category is not instant. With some cash-back cards, you will have to choose to redeem your rewards as a statement credit. Other cards only issue rewards once a year. It’s important to understand how to redeem your rewards before committing to a rewards-earning credit card.
