When a credit card issuer introduces a popular card, it’s not uncommon to see both a consumer version and a business version.

Take, for example, The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, or the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card.

Today we’ve chosen a similar card match-up with the Capital One Venture X Business Card (Information collected independently. Not reviewed by Capital One) and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

While the cards are strikingly similar, the business version of the card is obviously designed for business owners, and the consumer card for personal use.

There are even more features that differentiate the cards, and that’s the focus of our article today.

We’ll examine whether one card is better for your situation or if you might want to consider both of the cards. Just keep that thought in mind as we move forward with our card comparison.

Additional Redemption Options

Gift cards, Amazon shopping, checkout with PayPal, experiences

Redeeming Capital One miles for travel via Capital One Travel or a statement credit for previous travel purchases made within the past 90 days results in a value of 1 cent for each mile. Redeeming miles for a general statement credit results in far less value.

Hot Tip:

Book your flight with Capital One Travel to take advantage of complimentary price drop protection. If the price drops within 10 days after booking, you could receive up to $50 in travel credits for the price difference. Capital One Travel also has a price match guarantee.

The best potential value for your miles will be to transfer them to airline partners and purchase award flights.

While there are dozens of great redemption options, one good use of Capital One miles is to transfer them to Avianca LifeMiles and book transcontinental U.S. Polaris business class (with lie-flat seats!) on United Airlines. You can book transcontinental flights between New York and California for as few as 25,000 miles.

For inspiration on some of the best ways to redeem Capital One miles, we’ve done the work for you and put together a long list of ideas.

Bottom Line:

You can redeem miles earned on the Capital One Venture X Business card and the Capital One Venture X card by purchasing travel via Capital One Travel, transferring miles to partners, or as a statement credit for travel purchases from the previous 90 days. Additionally, you can redeem for gift cards, shopping on Amazon, or for checkout with PayPal. The best potential redemption option is to transfer miles to airline or hotel partners.

Travel Protections and Benefits

Travel protections and benefits can help your trip run exceptionally smoother. Image Credit: Faces of Travel via Adobe Stock

Travel protections can offer peace of mind knowing that you’ll receive assistance or help negating the unexpected expense if something goes wrong during your trip. Travel benefits can make your trip more comfortable and even provide a bit of luxury.

The Capital One Venture X Business card and Capital One Venture X card are both premium cards with plenty of premium benefits.

Here are some of the key protections and benefits you’ll find on both cards:

Rental Car Loss and Damage Insurance

Reserve and pay for your rental car with your car, decline the rental agency’s CDW/LDW coverage, and receive primary coverage for damage, theft, loss of use, and customary towing. The rental period cannot exceed 15 days when in the U.S. or 31 days outside the country. Primary coverage means you do not have to file a claim with any other auto insurance before card coverage applies.

Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, and Trip Delay

If your trip needs to be canceled or is interrupted for a covered reason, you and your immediate family members traveling with you could receive up to $2,000 per prepaid nonrefundable ticket.

If your trip is delayed more than 6 hours or overnight, you could receive up to $500 for qualifying incidentals, clothing, and hotel rooms.

Lost Luggage Reimbursement

Pay for your common carrier ticket with your card, and if your luggage is lost or stolen, you could receive up to $3,000.

$300 Annual Travel Credit

Each year, receive a $300 annual credit toward travel purchases via Capital One Travel.

Worldwide Airport Lounge Access

Enjoy a complimentary Priority Pass Select membership providing unlimited access to over 1,400 lounges worldwide for you and 2 additional guests. Registration is required.

You’ll also have access to Capital One Lounges and over 100 Plaza Premium Lounges, also including 2 guests (additional guests $45 per visit).

One key difference in lounge access between the 2 featured cards is that the Capital One Venture X Business card provides access to Priority Pass lounge-alternative restaurant properties while the Capital One Venture X card does not (hat tip to One Mile at a Time).

Additionally, authorized users on the Capital One Venture X card enjoy Priority Pass and Capital One Lounge access, the same as primary cardholders, while employee cardholders on the Capital One Venture X Business card do not have lounge access (hat tip to One Mile at a Time).

Global Entry/TSA PreCheck Fee Reimbursement

Pay for your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application or renewal fee with your card and receive reimbursement as a statement credit, with a maximum of 1 statement credit of up to $100 every 4 years.

Premier Collection and Lifestyle Collection Hotel Benefits

Book your Premier Collection or Lifestyle Collection hotel stay via Capital One Travel and enjoy a room upgrade (when available), daily breakfast for 2, complimentary Wi-Fi, early check-in/late checkout, and, best of all, up to $100 in credit for an onsite experience during your stay!

No Foreign Transaction Fees

You’ll find the Capital One Venture X Business card and Capital One Venture X card (rates & fees) are excellent travel companions as neither card charges foreign transaction fees.

Note that we have not included all of the travel protections and benefits that come with each card and the descriptions here have been abbreviated. Shopping Protections and Benefits

Shopping protections come in handy when an eligible purchase gets damaged, stolen, or even if the item stops working for a covered reason during the warranty period.

Shopping benefits can help you save money when shopping online or in person at select retailers — and these can be easy to utilize.

Here are the shopping protections and benefits you’ll find on both the Capital One Venture X Business card and the Capital One Venture X card.

Purchase Security and Extended Warranty Protection

Purchase security is a coverage we might forget to utilize even though so many items we purchase are eligible for the coverage. Items such as a new tent for camping, a children’s toy, a watch, your cell phone, or even a new laptop could receive coverage if damaged or stolen. Items may be covered for up to 90 days from the purchase date.

Extended warranty protection is a warranty extension for eligible items purchased with your card that have a manufacturer’s warranty of 3 years or less. Extended protection doubles the warranty for up to 1 additional year.

The limits for either coverage are up to $10,000 per item, up to $50,000 per cardholder.

Capital One Shopping

Capital One Shopping is available to everyone, not just Capital One cardholders. The browser extension saves you money by searching for coupons and deals when you’re shopping online.

Additional Shopping Protections and Benefits — Capital One Venture X Card

Cell Phone Protection

Pay for your monthly cell phone bill, including family members and others, with your card and receive up to $600 if the phone listed on the bill should be stolen or damaged. There is a deductible of $50 per claim and a limit of 2 claims per rolling 12-month period.

Return Protection

Purchase an item with your card, and if the merchant does not accept the return within 60 days of the purchase date, you could receive up to $300 per item with return protection coverage. There is a maximum limit of $1,000 per calendar year per account.

Capital One Offers

Log in to your online Capital One card account and select Capital One Offers from retailers and service providers. Make the required purchase and earn cash back in the form of a statement credit.

Bottom Line:

Don’t forget to use your Capital One Venture X Business card or Capital One Venture X card for shopping. Purchase security and extended warranty protection may provide coverage if something goes wrong with your purchase. And, when you pay your monthly bill with the Capital One Venture X card, you may have protection if your cell phone is damaged or stolen.

Authorized Users and Annual Fees

Adding employee cards to the Capital One Venture X Business card allows you to easily manage your business expenses. Adding authorized users to the Capital One Venture X card makes it possible to earn more rewards for their additional spending.

Fortunately, there is no charge to add employee cards to the Capital One Venture X Business card ($395 annual fee) or up to 4 additional cardholders on the Capital One Venture X card (rates & fees).

Qualifying for Capital One Cards

Capital One states that you will need an excellent credit score to be approved for the Capital One Venture X Business card or the Capital One Venture X card. While an excellent score is generally considered 800 and above, it may be possible to be approved with a very good score (740 or above) with a strong credit history.

Capital One also clarifies its requirements by asking if this statement describes you: “I’ve never declared bankruptcy or defaulted on a loan; I haven’t been more than 60 days late on any credit card, medical bill, or loan in the last year; I’ve had a loan or credit card for 3 years or more with a credit limit above $5,000.”

Additionally, Capital One will not approve you if you have secured too many credit cards in the recent past. The card issuer is also known to pull credit from all 3 major credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

For a risk-free way to see if you have Capital One offers available to you, you can try the CardMatch tool or Capital One’s own preapproval tool. No credit inquiry is pulled when using either tool.

Final Thoughts

Most likely, you would make the choice between a business card and a personal consumer card based on whether you have a need for one or the other.

In the case of the Capital One Venture X Business card and the Capital One Venture X card, it could make sense to have both cards.

If cell phone protection or worldwide lounge access for you and your extended family is a priority, the Capital One Venture X card has the edge. The card offers cell phone protection for service paid for monthly with your card, and worldwide lounge access applies to no-additional fee authorized users (rates & fees).

If you own a business with high monthly expenses, the Capital One Venture X Business card will ensure every purchase earns double miles. And, as a busy business owner, you won’t have to worry about keeping track of bonus spending categories. If personal lounge access (plus 2 guests) is important, you’ll have the added advantage of access to lounge-alternative Priority Pass restaurant properties with the card.

Plus, both cards offer enough economic value to offset the relatively lower annual fee of these premium travel rewards cards.
