Capital One Miles

The bonus alone should pay for a few years of annual fees!

2. Earn 10x Miles for Hotels and Rental Cars Booked Through Capital One Travel [$540]

Earning miles with the Capital One Venture X card is super easy because you can get up to 10x miles when you book hotels and rental cars through Capital One Travel.

For the relatively modest traveler that spends $3,000 per year on hotels and rental cars, which is equal to $250 per month, you can earn 30,000 Capital One miles, which is worth $540.

That’s an 18% return on your spend!

Hot Tip: In some instances, Capital One Travel offers cheaper hotel rates than booking direct, which further adds to the value proposition of the Capital One Venture X card.

3. Earn 5x Miles for Flights Booked Through Capital One Travel [$90]

Book a lot of flights? Be sure to book through Capital One Travel, which is where you can earn 5x miles.

Whether you’re flying on United, American, Delta, Spirit, Alaska, or any other airline, booking flights through Capital One Travel can get you a bunch of extra return on your spending.

If you spend just $1,000 per year on flights through Capital One Travel, you’ll earn 5,000 miles, which is worth $90.

That’s a 9% return on your spend!

4. Earn 2x Miles on All Other Purchases [$1,400]

One of the most valuable features of the Capital One Venture X card is that on all other purchases, you will earn an unlimited 2x miles per dollar.

The average household spends around $5,000 per month, with approximately $1,750 of that being housing costs (which we won’t count as a credit card purchase).

With those average spending habits, you will earn around 78,000 Capital One miles every year, which is worth around $1,400.

That’s a 3.4% return on your spend!

5. 10,000-Mile Anniversary Bonus [$180]

Another fantastic and unique perk the Capital One Venture X card offers is a cardmember anniversary bonus of 10,000 miles every year!

There’s no enrollment required or activation needed to take advantage of this benefit, so that’s essentially another $180 in value that the card provides every year.

Capital One Miles is one of the best flexible rewards currencies available. With the Capital One Venture X card, you’ll earn Capital One miles, which are transferrable to a variety of airline and hotel partners.

This includes exciting partners for booking award travel, including Emirates Skywards, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, and Air France/KLM Flying Blue.

As you can imagine, our favorite ways to redeem Capital One miles revolve around leveraging Capital One’s transfer partners strategically.

For example, if you want to book a business class flight to Singapore in Singapore Airlines’s award-winning business class product, you could transfer 95,000 to 99,000 Capital One miles to book a one-way business class ticket that would otherwise cost upwards of $5,000!

Another great way to redeem Capital One miles is for business class flights to Europe on Air France — redeem as few as 53,000 Capital One miles one-way for these tickets costing thousands of dollars!

We value the ability to transfer miles at $300, though you’ll certainly get more value if you’re a frequent award traveler.

7. Redeem Points Through Other Methods [$25]

If you don’t see yourself having the patience or flexibility to book award travel, you can redeem Capital One miles for travel through the Capital One Travel portal at a flat value of 1 cent per point, gift cards at a flat value of 1 cent per point, cash-back at a flat value of 0.5 cents per point, and more.

As you can tell, the value you’ll get from these “other methods” is generally a small fraction of the value you’d get from transfer partners.

We’ll peg this benefit at $25.

Travel Benefits and Protections

Some of the most exciting features of the Capital One Venture X card are the travel-related benefits and protections.

8. Up to $300 Capital One Travel Credit [$300]

One of the best benefits of this card is the up to $300 travel credit for bookings made through Capital One Travel.

Whether you’re booking flights, hotel stays, or car rentals, you can rest assured that this travel credit will return up to $300 in value to you.

9. Access to the Capital One Partner Lounge Network [$500]

Airport lounge access is becoming increasingly important in today’s travel world, and Capital One Venture X cardholders have access to over 1,400 lounges, including Capital One Lounges and the Partner Lounge Network.

Capital One Lounges

Capital One, in a similar fashion to American Express, is now offering its own premium airport lounge experience through its Capital One Lounges.

Capital One Lounges offer an incredible all-around airport lounge experience and are known for excellent service, a fantastic food and beverage program, and expansive facilities, including showers and Peloton bikes.

With the Capital One Venture X card, you can enjoy unlimited complimentary visits, as well as 2 included guests per visit (additional guests can pay $45 each).

There are 3 locations: Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Denver International Airport (DEN), and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).

Priority Pass Select Membership

The Capital One Venture X card offers a complimentary Priority Pass Select membership that covers over 1,400 lounges at major airports around the world.

Simply activate your membership and you can take up to 2 travel companions with you to various participating locations around the world.

After activation, you will receive a Priority Pass membership card in the mail, which you will provide at any Priority Pass lounges for access.

Plaza Premium Lounges

Cardholders can enjoy complimentary access for themselves and 2 guests to more than 100 Plaza Premium Lounges located in gateway airports around the world.

The amenities and facilities can vary from lounge to lounge, but generally include a hot food buffet, showers, cocktails, and an otherwise comfortable place to relax before your flight.

Hot Tip: Here’s a look at all of the lounges you can access with the Capital One Venture X card.

10. Global Entry or TSA PreCheck Fee Credit [$100]

As a complimentary benefit, the Capital One Venture X card boasts an application fee credit towards Global Entry ($100) or TSA PreCheck ($78).

We recommend Global Entry over TSA PreCheck because Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck. With Global Entry, you are also allowed expedited entry back into the U.S. when returning from international travel.

Because of the extraordinary time savings you’ll get from either of these 2 programs, we value this benefit at $100.

11. Complimentary Hertz President’s Circle Status [$100]

The Capital One Venture X card offers Hertz President’s Circle status, which is the highest elite status tier of Hertz Gold Plus Rewards.

Normally, you need 15 rentals annually or $3,000 worth of qualifying spending with Hertz to get President’s Circle status.

Hertz President’s Circle Status comes with:

  • Guaranteed upgrades of at least 1 class at participating locations
  • The ability to choose any vehicle in the President’s Circle section of the Hertz Ultimate Choice lot on the spot for free
  • No additional driver fee for a spouse or domestic partner in the U.S.
  • 50% bonus Gold Plus Rewards points on all qualifying rentals
  • Expedited vehicle pick-up at participating locations
  • No stopping at the counter at over 50 airports
  • No need to wait when returning your car with eReturn
  • Hertz Valet, a terminal drive-back service at participating locations (up to 4 times per year)
  • Dedicated call center line for President’s Circle members only

Although you get these benefits, we find the Hertz Ultimate Choice perk the one that is consistently most valuable.

We’ll peg this benefit at $100, though it’s certainly possible to get much more value if you frequently rent from Hertz.

12. Primary Rental Car Insurance [$200]

Because the Capital One Venture X card is a Visa Infinite card, holders of this card will enjoy all of the Visa Infinite benefits available, including primary rental car insurance.

With this card, you’ll get up to $75,000 of coverage (with certain exclusions including expensive, exotic, and antique cars) for rentals that are up to 15 days in the U.S. or up to 31 days abroad.

You’ll need to pay for the entire car rental with the Capital One Venture X card and refuse the collision damage and loss damage waiver coverages.

We value this primary rental car coverage at $200.

13. Trip Delay Insurance [$200]

You’ll also get trip delay insurance of up to $500 for each purchased ticket on a common carrier if your trip is delayed more than 6 hours or requires an overnight stay.

Your ticket must be purchased with your Capital One Venture X card, and you’re limited to 1 claim per trip — you, your spouse, and your dependent children under the age of 22 are eligible to apply for claims.

As long as your trip doesn’t exceed 365 days and is away from your city of residence, you should be covered.

We value this trip delay insurance reimbursement at $200.

14. Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance [$50]

If your trip is canceled or interrupted due to a covered reason, you can get coverage for arrangements including prepaid tours, trips, and vacations purchased with your Capital One Venture X card.

You, your spouse, and your dependent children are covered for up to $2,000 per person for nonrefundable common carrier tickets.

We value this benefit at $50.

15. Lost Luggage Reimbursement [$50]

If you ever lose your luggage while traveling, take advantage of this card’s lost luggage reimbursement, which covers up to $3,000 per trip (up to $2,000 per bag for New York residents).

You and your immediate family members will all be covered by this perk, which we value at $50.

16. Travel Accident Insurance [$50]

The last travel-related benefit we’ll discuss is the worldwide automatic common carrier travel accident insurance.

Capital One covers up to $1 million against accidental loss of life, limb, sight, speech, or hearing while riding as a passenger in, entering, or exiting any licensed common carrier, provided that the entire cost of the fare has been charged to your Capital One Venture X card.

Although this is quite a morbid topic (and a benefit we never hope to use), we’ll value this at $50.

Hot Tip: For more details, check out our full post about all of the Capital One Venture X travel insurance benefits.

Shopping Benefits and Protections

Whenever you make purchases on a credit card, it’s ideal to swipe with a card that offers you as much security as possible. This is one of the many areas where the Capital One Venture X card shines, so let’s take a look at all of the shopping benefits and protections cardholders get.

17. Purchase Security [$75]

With purchase security, you are protected for any retail purchases made with your eligible card for 90 days after the date of purchase.

You need to purchase a portion or the entire amount of the item with the Capital One Venture X card to get coverage — but once you do, you are covered for a maximum of $10,000 per item and up to $50,000 per cardholder in the event of theft or damage.

There are certain exclusions, but this coverage is valued at $75 in our minds.

18. Extended Warranty [$100]

Currently, the extended warranty protection offers 1 additional year on eligible warranties of 3 years or less.

So if there’s a 5-year warranty, this coverage would not add anything. Also, the benefit is limited up to the original price of the item minus shipping and handling fees for a maximum of $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per cardholder.

Certain exclusions apply, including aircraft, boats, cars, and other motorized vehicles, as well as software and any items purchased for resale, professional, or commercial use.

We value this benefit at $100.

19. Return Protection [$25]

Return protection is a fairly rare credit card benefit to find nowadays, but the Capital One Venture X card does feature this perk.

If you try to return an item purchased for personal use, not business use, within 90 days of your original purchase and the merchant refuses your return, you can apply for reimbursement from your Capital One Venture X card.

To state the obvious, you must have purchased the item with the Capital One Venture X card and have an original receipt for proof of purchase and price.

Coverage is offered for up to $300 per item and an annual maximum of $1,000 per account.

Certain exclusions apply, but we’ll value this benefit at $25.

20. Virtual Card Numbers via Eno [$25]

Another benefit unique to only a couple of credit card issuers is the ability to create virtual card numbers.

These card numbers conceal your actual card number when you are shopping online to minimize fraud.

This is done through Capital One’s 24/7 virtual assistant, Eno.

We value this benefit at $25.

21. No Foreign Transaction Fees [$100]

Foreign transaction fees can quickly add up when traveling abroad. With many credit cards charging foreign transaction fees of around 3%, using a credit card abroad that doesn’t charge these fees can save you a bunch of money (rates & fees).

We value this benefit at $100 based on a relatively modest amount of international spending of $3,333 per year.

Of course, you will end up saving more if you spend a lot outside of the U.S.

Hot Tip: Cardholders of the Capital One Venture X card, Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, and Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card can enjoy exclusive experiences and up to $300 in discounts towards a Gravity Haus membership. The club caters to adventurers who are interested in health and wellness and those who enjoy the outdoors.

Benefits at Home

Our last section is dedicated to looking at the best benefits you can take advantage of when you’re not traveling or shopping.

22. Access to Capital One Dining [$50]

Capital One Dining is a new benefit that Capital One cardholders can leverage to secure exclusive restaurant reservations.

American Express has a similar platform through Resy, but Capital One Dining allows select cardholders to make reservations that are exclusive to Capital One.

At the moment, Capital One Dining covers these major cities:

  • Boston
  • Chicago
  • Dallas
  • Denver
  • Las Vegas
  • Los Angeles
  • Miami
  • New York
  • Philadelphia
  • San Francisco
  • Washington, D.C.

If you consider yourself a foodie, you’ll find a lot more value in Capital One Dining than our modest assessment of $50.

23. Access to Capital One Entertainment [$50]

Yet another new development is Capital One Entertainment, which offers exclusive experiences across music, sports, dining, and so much more.

Although you can redeem miles for tickets, you can also make paid bookings for VIP packages, events, and more.

One neat perk that we have begun to see rolled out is the ability to redeem 100,000 points for Cardholder Exclusives, such as the NCAA Men’s Final Four Weekend in New Orleans, which included 2 suite seats, passes to Capital One JamFest, and access to the Men’s Final Four Fan Fest presented by Capital One.

Capital One’s list of partners is growing bigger and bigger every day, so we expect this benefit to become more valuable over time.

For now, we value it at $50.

24. Cell Phone Protection [$700]

One of the rarer credit card benefits that we find incredibly useful is cell phone insurance, also known as cell phone protection.

With the Capital One Venture X card, you will get complimentary cell phone protection when you charge your monthly cellular wireless bill to your card for the billing cycle before the month in which the incident occurs.

Lost cell phones are not covered, but any covered theft, damage, or involuntary or accidental parting for your cell phone counts — you’ll get up to $1,600 per rolling 12-month period, spread out across a maximum of 2 claims of up to $800 per claim. There is a $50 deductible, so you’re getting up to $750 per claim.

That means every year, you can get up to $1,500 in value — but because most phone screen replacements hover around $300 to $400 in price and there’s a $50 deductible per claim, we’ll peg this at $700 worth of value.

25. Referral Bonuses [$250]

You can earn even more rewards by referring a friend or family member to the Capital One Venture X card.

In general, you can earn up to 100,000 bonus miles from referrals every year, and the referral bonus is around 25,000 miles per approved referral.

Assuming you refer 1 friend per year, you can stand to earn 25,000 miles per year, which we conservatively value at 1 cent per mile, meaning this perk is worth $250.

26. Up to 4 Authorized Users [$1,000]

This credit card allows up to 4 authorized users for no additional fee, and each of these authorized users gets some phenomenal perks at no additional cost (rates & fees).

It’s important to note, though, that authorized users will not get an additional $300 travel credit, $100 Global Entry/TSA PreCheck application fee credit, 10,000 bonus miles, or welcome bonus.

However, what they will get is their own:

  • Complimentary Priority Pass Select membership
  • Unlimited access to Capital One Lounges and Plaza Premium Lounges (including 2 guests traveling with the authorized user)
  • Complimentary Hertz President’s Circle status
  • The same earning structure of 2x to 10x miles per dollar spent
  • All Visa Infinite perks (including baggage and trip insurance)

If you look at the benefits for authorized users, they can be valued at more than $2,000 per authorized user!

But in an effort to use conservative numbers, we’re pegging the value of each included authorized user card at a low $250. That means 4 no-additional-fee authorized users add a value of $1,000.

27. 6-Month Membership to The Cultivist [$25]

All Capital One credit cards come with a complimentary membership to The Cultivisit, a membership service that includes access to some of the best museums in the world. Capital One cardholders are eligible for Enthusiast memberships which usually cost $40 per month. This includes access for you and up to 3 guests at museums like The Met and The Guggenheim in New York City, plus skip-the-line benefits. Registration is required.

28. Complimentary Subscription to PRIOR [$10]

Capital One Venture X cardholders are eligible for a complimentary subscription to PRIOR, a website offering curated travel guides and newsletters. Enrollment is required.

Final Thoughts

There is plenty to love about the Capital One Venture X card. As one of the best ultra-premium travel rewards credit cards in the world, this product could very well be your wallet’s new favorite companion.

To start off, the welcome bonus and ability to earn up to 10x miles are impressive. Looking a bit deeper, you’ll find a lot of value in unique perks, such as widespread airport lounge access, an anniversary bonus of 10,000 miles, fantastic travel insurance, and up to a $300 travel credit towards bookings via Capital One Travel.

One of the most underrated benefits of this card is the ability to add up to 4 authorized users for no additional fee, which grows the value proposition even more (rates & fees).

All in all, the value you get from this card will vary depending on your situation. For example, those who want good perks for authorized users (such as family members) will get tons of value from the 4 authorized users, while those without families might not.

The Capital One Venture X card is one of the top credit cards on the market and one that we keep close. So, what’s in your wallet?
