Emirates’ global network is the largest in the Middle East with a hub at Dubai International Airport.

The first Emirates flight took to the sky in October 1985 with only 2 aircraft in its operations. Now, Emirates operates the world’s biggest fleet of Boeing 777s and Airbus A380s.

This post will teach you about which credit cards to use to earn more miles and how you can benefit from incorporating them into your miles-earning strategies. Emirates-branded cards are not available in the U.S., but fortunately, you can earn points by using many other credit cards and transfer them to your Skywards account. You will also learn about the many Emirates partners and how you can maximize the miles you earn with them.

When you’re finished reading, you will be fully prepared to start building up tons of Emirates Skywards Miles to your account. Let’s get started!

Earn Miles With Emirates’ Skywards Loyalty Program

1. Sign up With Skywards to Start Earning Miles

Skywards is the frequent flyer program run by Emirates. Enroll in Emirates Skywards for free and begin earning miles right away. Then, redeem miles with the airline’s wide partner selection to enjoy a variety of benefits and services. We go much more in-depth about the program in our Emirates Skywards loyalty review.

Once you’re signed up, you can log into your Skywards account to check your miles and recent transactions and find links to help you manage your account.

2. Book Flights on Emirates

Emirates Skywards is one of the few airline loyalty programs to provide both reward miles (Skywards Miles) and status miles (Tier Miles) for all fares.

Skywards Miles are based on the route, fare type, class, and tier (see website). Additionally, the Emirates Miles Calculator enables you to calculate the number of miles you’ll earn based on your fare, route, and class.

 Flex
 Flex Plus

 First
TierBlue: N/A
 Silver: 25% bonus
 Gold: 50% bonus
 Platinum: 75% bonus

*There are some restrictions on every fare except Flex Plus, which is unrestricted and completely flexible.

Earn up to 175% bonus miles in first class and business class depending on the fare type. Miles are credited after you’ve reached your destination.

3. Earn More With Skywards Status Tiers

As we mentioned, the Skywards Tiers are Blue, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. There are 2 ways to move to the next level: earning the required number of Emirates Tier Miles or completing the required number of Emirates flights.

Each time you reach a higher tier, you will receive more benefits such as dedicated check-in, priority boarding, and lounge access. You can remain at your Tier for 14 months. That means you get an extra 2 months even if you don’t meet the renewal qualifications during the annual review.

Earning Miles With Credit Cards

4. Chase Credit Cards

The single best way to earn Emirates Skywards Miles is by leveraging Chase Ultimate Rewards credit cards. The transfer ratio is 1:1, and miles get transferred almost instantly to your account. You can transfer in increments of 1,000. The best part is that you can earn Chase points across tons of different credit cards for each bonus category.

Recommended Chase Cards (Personal)

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card - This is our favorite beginners travel rewards card which has a 60,000 point bonus (highest ever) after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

This sign up bonus is worth $750 in travel purchases (flights, hotels, car rentals etc) when you redeem your points through Chase's travel portal, which works like Expedia. The bonus alone could get you multiple round-trip flights or hotel stays.
Chase Sapphire Reserve® - Consider this premium card if you want to get into a lot of airport lounges. The current sign up bonus is 50,000 points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. You'll also get a $300 travel credit per year which wipes away a big chunk of the $550 annual fee.
Chase Freedom Unlimited® - A simple, no annual fee card that earns you a $150 bonus after you spend $500 in your first 3 months. Earn 1.5% cash-back on all purchases, but you won't get any travel benefits or the ability to earn bonus points with this card.

Recommended Chase Cards (Business)

Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card - This is our #1 recommended business card and comes with a large 80,000 sign up bonus after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months after account opening. This bonus is worth $1,000 when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards for travel purchases (flights, hotels etc). Pay your cell phone bill with this card to receive up to $600 in cell phone insurance coverage per year.
Ink Business Cash℠ Credit Card - earn $500 bonus cash back after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months after account opening. This no annual fee business card earns up to 5% cash back on a range of business expenses such as office supply stores, internet, cable, and phone services.

5. American Express Credit Cards

Make purchases with your American Express credit cards to build up your Membership Rewards points. Then transfer them at a 1:1 ratio to receive Skywards Miles in increments of 1,000 (but watch out for sporadic bonuses that Amex often runs when transferring points to Emirates).

When typing in the number of reward points you want to convert on your American Express Membership Rewards account page, it will prompt you to sign in to make the transfer.

Recommended Amex Cards (Personal)

The Platinum Card® from American Express - There's currently a welcome bonus of 60,000 points after spending $5,000 in your first 3 months, worth at least $600.

This is our #1 card for accessing 1,200+ airport lounges worldwide (including Priority Pass). We leverage ~$2,700+ in value from the card every year. For rates & fees of the Platinum Card, click here.
American Express® Gold Card - We love using this card as it earns 4x points at restaurants worldwide and 4x points at US supermarkets (up to $25,000; then 1x). There's no better card in our opinion if you eat out and/or shop at supermarkets regularly.

With a welcome bonus of 35,000 points after you spend $4,000 in your first 3 months and a $100 airfare credit per year, it's a strong choice. For rates & fees of the Gold Card, click here.

Recommended Amex Cards (Business)

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express - Right now, there's a welcome bonus of up to 75,000 points. Earn 50,000 points after you spend $10,000 and an extra 25,000 after you spend an additional $10,000, on purchases within the first 3 months.

See how we get ~$5,525+ in value per year by leveraging many of the benefits & perks, including access to 1,200+ airport lounges worldwide. For rates & fees of the Business Platinum, click here.
American Express® Business Gold Card - probably our favorite Amex business card because we earn 4x points across the top 2 select categories that we spend the most money in each month, such as Facebook or Google ads. The 4x points applies to the first $150,000 in combined purchases from these 2 categories each calendar year. After that, you earn 1x. For rates & fees of the Business Gold Card, click here.
The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express - A super simple, no annual fee card that earns you 2x points on any business purchase, up to $50,000 annually (then 1x). That makes for an easy 100,000 points per year. For rates & fees of the Blue Business Plus, click here.

6. Capital One Miles

Instead of redeeming your Capital One miles in the Capital One Travel Portal for cash tickets, you now have the option to transfer them to your Emirates Skywards account at a 2:1 ratio.

13. Emirates Skywards My Family and Skysurfers

Emirates Skywards My Family
Emirates Skywards My Family allows you to combine miles into a family account. Image Credit: Emirates

Emirates Skywards My Family allows you to pool miles that your family members earn from flying Emirates. This excludes partner flights and other ways to earn Emirates Skywards Miles.

Up to 8 travelers related to the designated family head may pool their miles: husband, wife, partner, father, mother, step-father, step-mother, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son, step-son, daughter, step-daughter, brother, sister, granddaughter, grandson, and domestic helper.

Each member can designate what percent of future earned miles will go to the pool: 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, or 0%. You can adjust this rate at any time for future mile earnings. Prior earned miles do not go to the pool (you can still pay for miles transfer).

Like individual miles, My Family miles expire 3 years after they are earned (the end of the month of the family head’s birthday).

Emirates also offers the Skysurfers program, which allows children age 2-16 to get extra benefits while earning miles. They can spend their Skywards Miles on reward flights or choose books, toys, and more. Skysurfers can also earn Silver and Gold status.

  2. What I don’t understand is that many of the airline partners are full partners. You can only earn points for one at a time. Such as Alaska, I was told that I cannot earn Alaska points and Emirates points on the same flight? One or the other. Seems a little crazy. Basically stop earning on my current carrier? Very strange partnership. Open to comments or for you to tell me it is different.

Hi DG. You can only earn miles on one airline for a specific flight. You can select the airline you prefer but you cannot select more than one. If you could select more than one, you would be earning double miles for the flight, which would be wonderful, but it is not allowed.
