The Platinum Card® from American Express offers much more than a typical card, with a laundry list of perks and benefits.

For many years, I seriously considered adding it to my arsenal. However, it always came down to one thing: its substantial $895 annual fee (rates & fees). This is a serious amount of money, not a casual let’s-try-it-and-see kind of price, just for a card.

That’s an amount that demands justification, math, and an honest look at how I actually live and spend.

That concept really got me thinking, “Is the Amex Platinum card actually worth $895?” I set out to find out and added the Amex Platinum card to my wallet a year ago — and I haven’t looked back since.

Sticker Shock Is Real

There is no sugarcoating it: the Amex Platinum card’s annual fee is a massive upfront investment. Although I have numerous travel rewards cards, none have an annual fee remotely close to that of the Amex Platinum card.

However, when I looked more closely, the card seemed much more justified. The Amex Platinum card doesn’t try to hide its value, as it throws lifestyle credits and travel perks at you from every direction, which makes its fee easier to stomach.

Credits I Utilize To Offset the $895 Annual Fee

The first step in deciding whether the Amex Platinum card is worth its annual fee is to review the lifestyle and travel credits it offers, since these can effectively offset the annual fee.

Fortunately, there are quite a few, though not all of them offer me any real value. Here’s a breakdown of some of these credits and the value I get from each.

Prepaid Hotel Credit

The Amex Platinum card’s prepaid hotel credit is definitely the most valuable to me and a primary reason why I carry the card in my wallet.

This benefit provides up to $300 in annual hotel credits from January through June, with another $300 from July through December. Reservations must be made through American Express’ Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) and The Hotel Collection (the latter requires a 2-night minimum stay) and must be prepaid.

I recently used part of my $300 semiannual credit for a 1-night stay at the Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta. I plan to use the remaining credit at an FHR property in Bali, Indonesia, where I will be for the next 2 months.

I consider the prepaid hotel credit to be worth its full $600, as it’s very easy to use and I can redeem it without any hassle. This credit alone covers two-thirds of the Amex Platinum card’s annual fee.

Airline Incidental Fee Credit

The Amex Platinum card also provides an airline incidental fee credit (enrollment required), where, each year, cardholders can select a single eligible U.S. airline and use the credit to cover fees and extras charged directly by the airline.

This includes fees for items such as seat assignments and checked baggage. It also includes things like airport lounge passes and inflight dining and beverages.

Again, this credit is worth its full $200 to me. As I’m a frequent United Airlines traveler based in Chicago with Chicago O’Hare (ORD) as my primary airport, this credit is easy to use.

Hot Tip:

Charges made to your account before choosing an airline are not eligible for reimbursement. You must select an eligible airline before you can use the Amex Platinum card’s airline incidental credit.

Digital Entertainment Credit

The Amex Platinum card’s monthly digital entertainment credit (enrollment required) covers the cost of certain subscriptions, including Disney+, the Disney+ Bundle, ESPN+, Hulu, The New York Times, Paramount+, Peacock, The Wall Street Journal, YouTube Premium, and YouTube TV.

Although the digital entertainment credit provides me with up to $25 back each month, I don’t take it at face value. Of all the eligible subscription services, I only use YouTube Premium, which costs me $15.99 per month. I value this credit at roughly $192, enough to cover my YouTube Premium subscription.

Resy Credit

The Amex Platinum card’s up-to-$400 annual Resy credit (enrollment required) provides cardholders with an up to a $100 quarterly credit when you pay for eligible purchases at U.S. Resy restaurants. There are more than 10,000 restaurants on Resy in the U.S. alone.

Additionally, you don’t need to book a reservation through Resy for the credit to apply. Any eligible purchase (excluding merchandise and gift cards) at a U.S. restaurant partnered with Resy triggers the statement credit.

This credit is worth the full $400 to me, as I tend to eat a ton at restaurants. With this, I get to try new restaurants and return my favorites for an essentially complimentary meal.

When I’m in the U.S., I can easily use this for 1 or 2 nicer meals each quarter. Even when I’m abroad, my family makes full use of the credit and it reimburses me for the meal, making it a win-win.

Uber Cash

The Uber Cash credit provides cardholders with up to $15 per month (up to $35 in December) for U.S. Uber rides or Uber Eats purchases. To receive this benefit, link your Amex Platinum card to the Uber app to automatically receive the Uber Cash at the beginning of each month (any remaining balance on a purchase must be paid for with an American Express card).

This benefit is worth the full $200 to me, since I take an Uber to the airport once a month. However, on months that I’m staying home, I easily use the Uber Cash to order food delivery from Uber Eats.

Even though I’ve been outside the U.S. for the past 4 months, I’ve still been able to get full value by allowing my sister to use the credit with her Uber Eats account.

Walmart+ Credit

Lastly, the Amex Platinum card also provides a $155 Walmart+ credit that covers the monthly cost of the standard $12.95 Walmart+ subscription.

The Walmart+ membership provides a ton of benefits, including free shipping at Walmart, free grocery delivery with a $35 order minimum, a complimentary Paramount+ or Peacock subscription, and major gas discounts at more than 13,000 stations across the U.S.

Again, this credit is worth the full $155 to me. When I am in the U.S., I utilize the Walmart+ membership a ton, with frequent grocery deliveries to my door and discounts at Sam’s Club gas stations. However, even when I am not there, I let my family use the benefits.

Bottom Line:

Focusing only on the credits I personally use, the Amex Platinum card delivers roughly $1,750 in value per year. This doesn’t even account for the credits I don’t use or the additional perks and benefits that are harder to assign a clear monetary value to.

Credits That Provide Me Little to No Value

The Amex Platinum card offers additional credits not mentioned above, but they hold little value for me. Still, it’s worth including them, as they may be useful to others. This includes:

Enrollment is required for some of these benefits. Added together, they can provide an additional $800 in total value, which in itself is almost all of the Amex Platinum card’s annual fee.

While I can (and usually do) use these credits to get certain items at no cost, they don’t represent real value to me. I wouldn’t typically spend at these merchants if it weren’t for these benefits.

Card Benefits That Provide Additional Value

The Amex Platinum card also offers additional perks for cardholders. These include numerous travel benefits and credits that can be used every few years. Since most of these are perks of having the card, it’s difficult to assign a clear monetary value to them.

For example, the Amex Platinum card provides a statement credit for TSA PreCheck (every 4 1/2 years) or Global Entry (every 4 years), which reimburses the application fee for either program. I have had Global Entry (which includes TSA PreCheck) for nearly a decade — it’s something that brings me immense value.

Global Entry IAH signage
Global Entry is a highly valuable perk for my travels. Image Credit: Keri Stooksbury

Cardholders also get up to $209 in CLEAR+ credit each year, which covers the cost of an annual CLEAR+ membership. Although this is an excellent perk (and credit I use each year), I tend to use CLEAR+ only when it’s available at airports I am traveling through, and I’m not sure I’d pay for it if the credit didn’t exist.

However, arguably much more important are the perks you receive for being an Amex Platinum cardholder. This includes the most comprehensive airport lounge access of any card.

Cardholders get access to airport lounges through the American Express Global Lounge Collection, which includes Priority Pass select lounges (enrollment required), Centurion Lounges (both in the U.S. and abroad), Escape Lounges – The Centurion Studio PartnerPlaza Premium Lounges, and 10 annual visits to Delta Sky Clubs (when flying with Delta the same day), among others.

Given how much I travel, I make extensive use of airport lounges, expecting to visit at least 25 per year.

Additionally, the Amex Platinum card provides elite status with several major hotel chains, including Hilton Honors Gold statusLeaders Club Sterling status, and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status (upon enrollment). Hotel elite status typically offers additional benefits, including extra points on stays, space-available room upgrades, and late checkout (if available).

Finally, the Amex Platinum card includes travel insurance and purchase protections that are often overlooked. You may never have to rely on them, but when you do, they can prove incredibly valuable.

Final Thoughts

The Amex Platinum card is a terrific travel card that has a ton to offer. Although it has a substantial $895 annual fee, the card offers me significantly more value.

I wouldn’t recommend this card to everyone. In fact, I’d probably caution most people against it. However, for the right person — someone who travels frequently enough or optimizes lifestyle perks and benefits — this card can be a no-brainer.

I would likely take a second look at the Amex Platinum card if any major benefits were removed or the annual fee were increased. However, for now, I plan to keep the Amex Platinum card indefinitely.
