If you’ve ever flown to or from Ireland or spent any time there, there’s a good chance you’re already familiar with Aer Lingus, the shamrock-branded airline that serves as the ferryman for many Irish families to other parts of the world and for tourists to Éire.

But even diehard Aer Lingus flyers can get tripped up by the airline’s loyalty program, AerClub. This program has potentially outstanding perquisites for frequent customers, a sometimes confusing relationship with partner airlines, and a shared currency with 5 other airlines. That’s why it’s important to research and review the program’s ins and outs with the help of experts to make sure you’re getting the most out of your membership.

Whether you’re completely new to Aer Lingus or have flown it so often that you now hear “Fáilte!” in your dreams, this guide will have you maximizing your Avios and planning your next Dublin or Cork visit in no time.

Aer Lingus Overview

Aer Lingus is Ireland’s national airline. Founded in 1936, it is one of the oldest airlines in Europe. The airline’s central hub is Dublin Airport (DUB). Although it isn’t part of a major airline alliance, it maintains partnerships with Alaska Airlines, British Airways, United Airlines, and other major carriers around the world.

Aer Lingus AerClub uses Avios as its loyalty currency. You can redeem Avios for flights operated by Aer Lingus and its partners. You can link your AerClub account to other Avios-based loyalty programs from British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Qatar Airways, and Vueling, and transfer Avios freely between these accounts. The airline also provides ways to redeem Avios for car rentals, hotels, and experiences, though these options will typically yield less value than redeeming for flights.

Frequent flyers can earn elite status with AerClub. There are 3 elite tiers, each with varying benefits that improve the more you fly. Some benefits include complimentary checked luggage and airport lounge access. You earn AerClub elite tiers by earning tier credits over a calendar year.

Bottom Line:

Aer Lingus AerClub rewards passengers for flying with the airline and its partners. While the airline isn’t a member of a major alliance, it has partnerships with major airlines in the U.S., Europe, and elsewhere.

AerClub Elite Status

As mentioned, there are 3 AerClub elite tiers: Silver, Platinum, and Concierge. Members without elite status start at the basic Green tier.

AerClub’s elite tiers include various benefits, and they improve as you rise through the ranks. We’ve covered each elite tier and its benefits below. Unless otherwise noted, higher elite tiers have all the benefits of the tiers below them.

Silver: This is the first AerClub elite tier, offering the following benefits:

  • 25% bonus Avios on Aer Lingus flights
  • Priority check-in at select airports
  • Fast-track security at Amsterdam (AMS), Belfast (BFS), Birmingham (BHX), Dublin (DUB), London (LHR), and Shannon (SNN) airports
  • Priority boarding on Aer Lingus flights
  • Airport lounge access in certain European airports and New York City (JFK)
  • Complimentary 10 kilograms (22 pounds) checked luggage on Aer Lingus flights (7 kilograms (15 pounds) on Aer Lingus Regional)

Platinum: AerClub’s middle elite tier has access to these benefits:

  • 50% bonus Avios on Aer Lingus flights
  • Complimentary transatlantic business class upgrade
  • Lounge access for a companion
  • Higher upgrade priority when waitlisted
  • Complimentary 20 kilograms (44 pounds) checked luggage on flights to the U.K. and the rest of Europe
  • Complimentary 23 kilograms (50 pounds) checked luggage on flights to the U.S., Barbados, and Canada

Concierge: AerClub’s top-tier elite status gives members:

  • 75% bonus Avios on Aer Lingus flights
  • 4 complimentary transatlantic business class upgrades
  • 1 companion certificate
  • Guaranteed seat on full flights
  • Dedicated help desk for Concierge members
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi on transatlantic flights, up to 400MB of data
  • Waived change and refund fees
  • Option to travel on an earlier flight
  • Nominate a companion for Silver status

Check out AerClub’s elite status page here for more information on each tier.

Bottom Line:

AerClub elite status gives frequent flyers access to benefits like upgrades and airport lounge access. This can make traveling with Aer Lingus and its partners less expensive and more comfortable.

Value of AerClub Elite Status

AerClub elite status is valuable, but you must fly with Aer Lingus regularly to maximize its benefits. This is especially true considering that most benefits don’t extend to partner airlines like British Airways.

The most interesting benefits are complimentary transatlantic upgrade certificates at the Platinum and Concierge tiers and lounge access with all Aer Lingus elite tiers. Upgrades alone can be worth thousands of dollars on long-haul transatlantic flights. Likewise, lounge access can save you money over buying food and drinks at the airport.

Earning AerClub Elite Status

You earn AerClub elite status by earning a set number of tier credits between April 1 and March 31 of the following year. When you earn status, you’ll enjoy it until the end of March of the following status year.

You can earn tier credits when you fly with Aer Lingus, American Airlines, and British Airways. The number of tier credits you earn is based on where you fly and what cabin you book. Instead of distance-based earning, you earn tier credits based on the region you fly to and from.

For example, here’s the tier point earning chart for transatlantic Aer Lingus flights. You earn the same number of tier credits no matter where you fly in North America, but earnings vary greatly depending on your cabin class and fare type. You can see all AerClub tier credit earning charts on the airline’s website.

How To Earn AerClub Avios

You can earn AerClub Avios when you fly with Aer Lingus and its partners, through credit cards, and by leveraging other travel partners. Here’s a look at all the best ways to earn AerClub Avios toward award flights.

Earning AerClub Avios When You Fly

As you might expect, you earn Avios whenever you fly with Aer Lingus and its partner airlines. On Aer Lingus flights, you earn based on how much you paid for your ticket. You earn 3 Avios per €1 or $1 paid for a flight, 4 per £1, or 2 per CA$1. You earn Avios on the fare, excluding government-imposed taxes and ancillary fees like checked bag and seat selection fees.

Aer Lingus Avios Earn Rate

You can also earn Avios on American Airlines, British Airways, and United Airlines flights. On AA-operated flights, the way you earn depends on how you book. If you fly an American codeshare flight booked through Aer Lingus, you earn based on how much you spend using the rates above.

Meanwhile, British Airways and United Airlines flights — as well as American Airlines tickets booked directly through American — earn based on your fare class and how long the flight is. You can view these earning charts on AerClub’s Avios collection page here.

Here’s United’s earning chart as an example:

Based on this chart, a United flight from New York (LGA) to Chicago (ORD) in P fare business class would earn 733 Avios since these tickets earn 100% of the physical miles flown. Meanwhile, a flight booked in T fare economy would earn 367 Avios since this fare class earns at a rate of 50% miles flown.

Earn AerClub Avios With Credit Cards

Aer Lingus issues co-branded credit cards in Ireland and the U.S., with the sole U.S. credit card being the Aer Lingus Visa Signature® Card. Further, you can transfer rewards from American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One Miles, and Bilt Rewards to AerClub Avios. We’ll detail these options further later in this review.

Buy AerClub Avios

You can purchase Avios directly from Aer Lingus here. You must buy a minimum of 2,000 Avios and can purchase up to 200,000 Avios per year. Further, you must have earned at least 1 Avios in the last 3 years to buy Avios from the airline.

Your price depends on how many Avios you purchase in a single transaction. Generally, the more Avios you buy, the less you’ll pay per Avios. For example, if you buy 200,000 Avios in 1 transaction for $4,599, you’ll get the lowest rate of just under 2.3 cents per Avios. Meanwhile, 2,000 Avios costs $65 for 3.25 cents per Avios.

Aer Lingus Buy Avios Page

That’s still higher than our valuation of 1.25 cents per AerClub Avios. However, it could make sense to buy a small amount if you need to top up your account for a specific award ticket. Aer Lingus runs Avios sales throughout the year, which can drop the price further.

Other Ways To Earn AerClub Avios

The airline partners with a handful of major airlines and hotel groups and lets you earn Avios when you rent or stay. For example, you can earn Avios instead of Marriott Bonvoy points when staying at Marriott hotels.

The airline also has partnerships with other travel companies: Lounge Pass, Viator, and Royal Caribbean Cruises. The number of Avios you earn with each partner depends on what you book and how much you spend. View the earn rates for each partner on the airline’s Travel Extras page.

Further, you can book vacation packages with Holidays with Aer Lingus and earn 1 Avios per €1 spent on packages. You can bundle things like flights, hotels, and rental cars into 1 booking, centralizing billing and letting you earn extra points.

Like many major airlines, Aer Lingus AerClub has an online shopping portal where you can earn Avios when you shop. If you’re based in the U.S., make sure you visit the American version of the portal to ensure you earn with U.S.-based merchants.

Hot Tip:

Use a shopping portal aggregator like CashBackMonitor.com before you shop online to ensure you’re getting the most points from your purchase.

Branded and Partnered Credit Cards

As mentioned, you can earn Avios using an Aer Lingus-branded credit card or by transferring points from another loyalty program.

Aer Lingus Credit Cards

Aer Lingus offers co-branded credit cards in Ireland and the U.S. If you’re an American looking for an Aer Lingus card, the Aer Lingus Visa Signature® Card from Chase is your best bet. It offers a handful of benefits in addition to earning Avios on everyday purchases, including the ability to earn a Commercial Companion Ticket and priority boarding on select flights.

You can also transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to AerClub Avios at a 1:1 ratio. Amex Membership Rewards points are some of the easiest to earn because the issuer offers numerous business and personal cards.

Bilt Rewards is a newer transferable points program that launched in 2021. You can earn Bilt Points with or without the Bilt Mastercard by paying your rent and spending with Bilt Dining restaurants, Lyft, Walgreens, and other partners.

Bilt Rewards offers a slew of excellent transfer partners in addition to Aer Lingus. Some of our favorites include Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan and World of Hyatt. These partners make it worth spending on the Bilt Card, especially since there’s no annual fee.

Chase

Chase Ultimate Rewards are another favorite among the Upgraded Points team, largely because of its transfer partners. In addition to AerClub, you can transfer points to airlines and hotel groups, including Air France-KLM Flying Blue and World of Hyatt.

Before applying for a Chase credit card, make sure you’re familiar with the bank’s unofficial (but heavily enforced) 5/24 rule. In short, this prevents you from being approved for a Chase personal or business card if you’ve opened 5 or more credit cards in the past 24 months.

How To Redeem AerClub Avios

Now for the fun part: Redeeming your hard-earned AerClub Avios.

You can redeem your Avios for flights on Aer Lingus. The airline adheres to a standard award chart, so you pay a predictable price for award tickets. However, peak and off-peak dates can affect pricing.

Aer Lingus publishes its award chart on its website (PDF link). Flights get more expensive the farther you fly, starting at 4,000 Avios for short-haul economy flights and topping out at 75,000 Avios for its longest flights in business class. You pay moderate award taxes and fees when you redeem Avios.

Some of the best deals are on flights from the U.S. to Ireland. For example, you’d pay just 13,000 Avios plus moderate taxes and fees for economy flights from Boston (BOS), Chicago (ORD), Cleveland (CLE), Hartford (BDL), Indianapolis (IND), Minneapolis (MSP), Nashville (BNA), Newark (EWR), New York (JFK), Philadelphia (PHL), Toronto (YYZ), and Washington, D.C. (IAD), to Dublin (DUB) on off-peak dates.

You can redeem your Avios for cabin upgrades, car rentals, and experiences, too. That said, you get the best value when you redeem your Avios for flights. You can also use your Avios to pay for a portion of your flight — filling in the rest with cash — but also at a lower value than award flights.

Booking Online

Redeeming your Avios for flights online is simple. Do the following:

  1. Log in to your Aer Lingus AerClub.
  2. Navigate to the Rewards Flights page.
  3. Enter your desired itinerary at the center of the page and click “Search Flights.”
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to book your ticket.

Transferring to Other Avios Airlines

One unique feature of Avios-based loyalty programs is the ability to transfer Avios between them. So while you might be unable to use your AerClub Avios with most partners directly, transferring them to another Avios airline makes this possible.

The following programs use Avios:

Read our complete guide to transferring Avios between loyalty programs for information on how to transfer them. Additionally, read up on each program and when it’s best to use them — you can often book the same tickets at different prices.
