If you hold elite status with another airline, you’re in luck, as United MileagePlus is once again matching elite status from competing airlines under its rebooted Status Match Challenge program.

This lets you enjoy the benefits of United Premier status for 120 days after you take a qualifying United flight. Then, upon meeting posted flight requirements, you can enjoy those benefits through January 2028.

This year, United is even offering matches and challenges up to Premier 1K status — its top tier — which wasn’t available in previous versions of this offer.

Here’s what you need to know about United’s Status Match Challenge program.

You’ll need elite status with another major airline to take advantage of United’s rebooted Status Match Challenge. Here’s how your status in other programs will translate into MileagePlus:

Once you enroll in the promotion and get confirmation that your status match is active, you have 90 days to fly an “Activating Flight.” This can be any United or United Express flight. Then, 5 to 7 days after completing your Activating Flight, your new United elite status will be active for 120 days.

If you do not complete an Activating Flight, you will not be granted status and cannot request another match this year.

Further, you can extend your status to January 31, 2028 (the end of the 2027 status year) by meeting the following requirements while your temporary status is active in 2026:

For this challenge, only flights on United or United Express count (not partners), so keep this in mind if you decide to enroll. However, the PQPs can come from spending on United Airlines credit cards.

Should You Match Your Elite Status to United Now?

Whether you should match now or later depends on how much you plan to fly United. If you have multiple United flights coming up in the next 120 days, it could make sense to match your status if you’re confident you’ll meet the PQF and PQP requirements.

At the same time, you might consider waiting until July 1 to match your elite status to United if you think you’ll have more United flights in the middle of the year. If you do this, you’ll have to meet the same requirements, but you can keep your status through mid-2028, rather than ending in January 2028.

Final Thoughts

If you’re considering switching to your flying to United, you can match your existing elite status to an equivalent United Premier status tier. By matching your status, you won’t have to fly as much to work your way up the elite ranks. Plus, you only need one flight to activate your temporary benefits.
