American Express Membership Rewards

Unlike the consumer version, the Amex Business Platinum card did receive changes to its earning structure. It, too, saw additions to its range of new benefits, as well as an increase in annual fee from $695 to $895.

The Amex Business Platinum card previously earned 5x points per dollar spent on flights and prepaid hotels booked on AmexTravel.com and 1.5x points on purchases of at least $5,000 or select business categories, including U.S. construction material and hardware suppliers, electronic goods retailers and software and cloud system providers, and shipping providers. The 1.5x earnings were valid up to $2 million of these purchases per calendar year, then the earning rate dropped to 1x points.

Now, the Amex Business Platinum card earns 2x points (instead of 1.5x points) per dollar spent on the same eligible business purchases, up to $2 million combined per calendar year:

  • U.S. construction material and hardware suppliers
  • Electronic goods retailers and software and cloud system providers
  • Shipping providers
  • Eligible purchase of $5,000 or more

In addition to the change in earning rates, the Amex Business Platinum card received new or increased statement credits in this refreshthough not as many as the personal version:

  • Up to $600 in prepaid hotel credits annually: Receive up to $300 in statement credits semi-annually for up to a total of $600 each calendar year on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings through AmexTravel.com.
  • Complimentary Leaders Club Sterling Status with The Leading Hotels of the World: Enroll and receive complimentary Leaders Club Sterling Status from The Leading Hotels of the World, which provides benefits such as a 5% Leaders Club points bonus on qualifying stays and up to 5 pre-arrival room upgrades annually, subject to availability.
  • Unlock more benefits after spending $250,000 per year: If you meet or exceed that spending threshold, you’ll be eligible to take advantage of a $1,200 AmexTravel.com online flight statement credit and a $2,400 American Express One Accounts Payable (AP) statement credit.

These add to existing benefits on the Amex Business Platinum card. Enrollment required for many of these benefits:

  • Up to $200 in annual Hilton credits
  • Up to $200 in annual airline incidental fee credit
  • $250 in Adobe credits when you spend $600 or more on eligible U.S. purchases
  • Up to $1,150 in Dell credits
  • Up to $209 CLEAR® Plus membership credit
  • TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fee credit (up to $120 for Global Entry every 4 years or up to $85 for TSA PreCheck every 4.5 years)
  • Access to over 1,550 airport lounges globally via the Amex Global Lounge Collection
  • Hotel elite status benefits, including Hilton Gold and Marriott Gold Elite, and car rental elite status benefits with Avis, Hertz, and National
  • 35% Pay With Points Rebate: You can redeem your Membership Rewards points on AmexTravel.com for your designated qualifying airline (valid in any cabin) and receive a 35% Pay With Points rebate — up to 1 million points back annually.

Hot Tip: Check to see if you’re eligible for a welcome bonus offer of up to 250,000 points with the Amex Business Platinum card. The current public offer is 150,000 200,000 points. (This targeted offer was independently researched and may not be available to all applicants.)

Which Amex Platinum Card Is Best for You?

Of course, these cards are similar as they’re essentially 2 sides of the same coin. They both offer access to the Amex Global Lounge Collection and offer similar travel benefits. However, they’re different enough that you’ll need to consider which one would work better in your lifestyle before submitting an application.

Ultimately, though, which card is best for you depends on how you spend money and what you value in a premium travel rewards card.

If you’re a business owner who spends robustly within the 2x bonus categories on the Amex Business Platinum card, it will likely be a no-brainer for you. With the potential to earn up to 4 million Membership Rewards points per year on those purchases alone (not counting non-bonus or qualifying spend on flights or hotel stays), you could earn a tremendous amount of rewards in a year.

We value American Express Membership Rewards points at 2.2 cents apiece. This means that if your business has the capacity to maximize the 2x bonus categories and earn 4 million points, your rewards would be worth a whopping $88,000 — and that doesn’t even factor in additional spending in other categories or in the 5x bonus category for eligible flights and hotel stays.

Amex Platinum Amex Business Platinum Upgraded Points LLC Large

The Amex Business Platinum card also excels with its unique 35% Pay With Points benefit and business-focused benefits. However, its personal counterpart, the Amex Platinum card, shines when it comes to lifestyle and travel-specific perks and benefits.

If you’re a frequent traveler who enjoys dining out, shopping, fitness, and more lifestyle-centric activities but do not have the capacity to spend millions of dollars per year on business-related expenses, the Amex Platinum card is hard to beat. You’ll be able to take advantage of everyday statement credits, like up to $100 each quarter for Resy purchases, up to $75 at lululemon each quarter, and so much more.

Bottom Line:

Ca’t decide? It’s possible to have both Amex Platinum cards in your wallet, especially if you’re looking to earn massive welcome bonus offers.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, you’ll have to make your own decision regarding whether the Amex Platinum card or the Amex Business Platinum card is better for your life.

As a general rule, though, if you have a business that spends healthily on business-related expenses year after year, you’d probably be better served by the Amex Business Platinum card, thanks to its high-powered points-earning potential on those purchases.

However, if your spending habits fall closer to the “normal” category, but you travel often and live in an area that will allow you to take advantage of the seemingly endless list of lifestyle perks and statement credits, the personal Amex Platinum card would make a great addition to your wallet.

No matter which option you choose, you’ll have a tremendously powerful tool in your wallet that will help you earn plenty of rewards toward future travel experiences and elevate your journeys at every step.
