Key Takeaways

  • United Polaris offers a solid business-class experience with lie-flat seats and luxury bedding by Saks Fifth Avenue.
  • Inflight entertainment comprises a 16-inch touchscreen with headphones provided.
  • Polaris lounges provide exclusive amenities such as premium dining, spa-like showers, and quiet spaces for relaxation before boarding.

United Airlines has standardized almost its entire long-haul fleet with the Polaris business class and opened several Polaris lounges dedicated exclusively to passengers flying its flagship product.

Updated Polaris cabins, offering direct aisle access to all window seats, are now installed in all of United’s Boeing 767s, 787s, and 777s.

Let’s dive in and discuss everything you need to know about United’s top cabin.

Polaris Experience

United now has one of the best business class products in North America. That’s a big change from before the Polaris retrofit began in 2016, when United’s business class had a deservedly inferior reputation.

Similarly, the Polaris lounges are excellent, much better than United Clubs.

Seat

United Polaris seats are now largely standardized. They are, in short, very good seats.

Polaris cabins are arranged in a 1-2-1 layout or 1-1-1 on Boeing 767s. This means that every seat has direct aisle access without you having step over neighbors.

Every seat can be converted to a lie-flat bed, offering nearly unlimited legroom. Seat width varies between 20.5 and 22 inches, depending on the aircraft.

On 777s and 787s, odd-numbered seats in the center block of 2 seats are best if you travel with a partner since the seats are parallel and right next to each other. However, if you are traveling alone in one of these seats, you can still put up a privacy divider. This divider can be used during takeoff and landing.

The seats in even-numbered rows face the aisle and do not have quite as much privacy. While they are the same as all other Polaris seats in terms of space and features, be aware of this when booking your business class seat on United.

Above the 16-inch inflight entertainment system display, you’ll find a bar to help you stand up from your seat without rocking the person in front of you. You and your fellow passengers will appreciate not being disturbed while sleeping on long-haul flights.

Amenities

As you board United Polaris, you will find at your seat a sleep set with a blanket and pillow from Saks Fifth Avenue, plus a smaller memory foam pillow. Most airlines offer a single pillow in business class.

You can request a mattress pad in addition to the sleep set. It’s better to do so at the beginning of your flight since flights typically do not carry pads for every seat, and they are first come, first served. Slippers are also available on request. On flights over 14 hours, you can also request a pair of pajamas.

You will also find an amenity kit in a cross-body bag from Therabody at your seat. It contains essentials such as earplugs, an eye mask, tissues, a pen, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and single-use socks. There is also eye serum, facial spray, hand cream, lip balm, and a facial wipe.

Unlike the bedding, the amenity kit is yours to keep.

Food and Beverages

United Polaris Dining

Onboard catering has typically been United Polaris’ weak spot. The airline now allows you to preorder your meals using the United app or site before a flight, but the quality of Polaris onboard meals can be hit or miss.

You are served multicourse meals, typically on a single tray instead of in successive courses. Alcohol beverages are free and listed on the menu, which are at your seat upon boarding.

After service cuts during the COVID-19 pandemic, United returned customer favorites like the ice cream sundae cart, reintroduced in February 2023.

Inflight Entertainment

The Polaris inflight entertainment system has a 16-inch touchscreen monitor. You can select items using a wired remote or the touchscreen. In the side console are a pair of headphones to use throughout the flight.

United provides plenty of shows and movies to keep you entertained when you’re not sleeping on long flights.

Wi-Fi is available on all planes with Polaris. Pricing varies according to the route.

United does not use Gogo Inflight Internet on long-haul flights, so you won’t be able to use your complimentary Gogo passes provided by The Business Platinum Card® from American Express.

Polaris Lounges

United made a huge upgrade by introducing the Polaris lounges, which are a step up from United Club lounges and accessible only to Polaris passengers or those in business or first class on Star Alliance airlines.

You can expect a much better experience in a Polaris lounge than at standard business-class lounges, with amenities ranging from restaurant-quality, sit-down dining (on top of the regular buffet) to showers.

What Airports Have a Polaris Lounge?

The catch is that Polaris lounges are not at every airport United serves with Polaris-equipped planes. Polaris lounges are currently open at the following airports:

At airports served by Polaris-equipped planes but without a Polaris lounge, you get access to the United Club, if present, or a partner lounge.

In addition to the Polaris lounges, United also operates an international arrivals lounge at London Heathrow (LHR) exclusively for United Polaris business class travelers. Eligible travelers must fly on a same-day ticket, arrive before noon, and may not bring guests.

Lounge Access Policies

Access to the Polaris Lounge is pretty exclusive. Passengers in Polaris business class must depart from the airport on the same day to gain access to the lounge. If connecting, these passengers can visit upon arrival or before departure. Bringing guests is not allowed.

Passengers on a Star Alliance partner booked in business or first class on an international long-haul flight can also access the Polaris lounge, but only if they depart from that airport. These passengers do not receive access if they arrive on an international long-haul flight. Only those in first class may bring a guest.

If United markets a flight as “United Business” rather than Polaris, you do not have access to the lounge even if you’re on an international flight. Domestic business class and first class passengers (including to and from Hawaii) don’t have access, even if the flight is marketed as a “p.s.” (premium service) flight.

United Club memberships do not give you access to the Polaris Lounge.

What Routes Have Polaris Business Class?

A United Airlines Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner at LAX
United’s Boeing 787-10s have 44 Polaris seats out of 318 total. Image Credit: Daniel Ross

The Polaris product is on most United twin-aisle aircraft, including the Boeing 777-300, 777-200, 767-300, 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10 aircraft. The exception is some 777-200s flying domestic routes, which have an older first class in a 2-4-2 configuration.

Business class is marketed as Polaris on transatlantic flights on single-aisle Boeing 757-200s, used on some transcontinental and shorter U.S.-Europe routes. However, it is far from the actual Polaris, with a 2-2 layout and older seats.

How To Earn Miles to Book Polaris

There are many ways to book United flights with miles. United is a Star Alliance member with many partners around the globe, and there are also several options for earning miles through credit card partners.

Let’s start with earning United miles. There are a few credit cards that will allow you to earn United miles directly.

About Spencer Howard

Always a fan of flying, it was only natural that Spencer was drawn to finding a way to improve the travel experience.

Like many, he started this journey searching for cheap flights to take him around the world. This was fun for a while, but Spencer was intrigued by the idea of flying in business and first class!

Throwing himself into what became an extensive research project, Spencer spent 3-4 hours per night learning everything he could about frequent flyer miles over the course of several months (he thinks this is normal). He runs Straight to the Points, an award-seat alert platform.
