Venmo is one of the most popular peer-to-peer payment platforms on the market today. Originally, it was built as an app where you could split bills with friends and family members — nowadays, Venmo is used to send remittances to family members in the U.S., pay consultants or contractors, or purchase other goods and services.

Normally, you can just link up your bank account to Venmo to easily exchange funds. But if you’re savvy and use the right credit cards, you can earn some rewards to go along with your purchase. You’ve just got to be careful to use the right card at the right time in order to avoid losing big on fees.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the best credit cards to use for Venmo.

What To Look for in a Card for Venmo

Although this wasn’t the case in the past, paying a friend with a credit card is now a costly endeavor. Most of the major banks and payment networks now code Venmo as a cash advance, which not only means that you’ll be hit with cash advance fees, but your Venmo transaction won’t even earn any rewards.

So, the single, most important factor to look for in a card to use on Venmo is cash advance fees — you’ll want to find a card that doesn’t charge cash advance fees for Venmo transactions. Unfortunately, there aren’t that many banks that code Venmo transactions as purchases.

Here’s a list of banks that code Venmo transactions as cash advances:

  • Bank of America
  • Barclays
  • Capital One
  • Chase
  • Citibank
  • U.S. Bank
  • Wells Fargo

And here’s the list of banks that code Venmo transactions as purchases:

  • American Express
  • Discover

Unfortunately, Discover offers relatively lackluster rewards and benefits from its credit cards — American Express is the much better issuer of top-shelf cards that offer excellent travel rewards and benefits.

For this reason, we’ll be focusing on our favorite Amex cards in this Venmo-centric guide.

The 3 Best Personal Cards for Venmo

All of our featured personal cards earn 1x Membership Rewards points on payments or transactions through the Venmo app and have no preset spending limit, meaning your spending limit is flexible. Unlike a traditional card with a set limit, the amount you can spend adapts based on factors such as your purchase, payment, and credit history.

Final Thoughts

Overall, there aren’t as many options for cards to use with Venmo as there were in the past. This is because an increasing number of banks and card issuers treat Venmo as peer-to-peer payments, which triggers cash advance fees.

To date, American Express and Discover are 2 of the only major card issuers that still treat Venmo as a purchase, allowing you to earn rewards and avoid triggering cash advance fees.

Discover generally lags behind in terms of rewards, so we’ve focused most of our energy on American Express cards. In particular, we’ve walked you through 6 of the best card options for Venmo purchases. We hope that this guide has been helpful!

Frequently Asked Questions

What cards work best with Venmo?

In general, American Express and Discover cards are great options for Venmo. That’s because other credit cards from banks like Chase, Citi, and Wells Fargo all trigger cash advance fees.

Is it okay to use a credit card on Venmo?

Yes, however, you’ll want to make sure that the credit card you use on Venmo doesn’t incur cash advance fees. In general, you’ll need to stick to either American Express or Discover cards.

Is it better to use a bank or a card for Venmo?

In general, if you can earn rewards that exceed the credit card transaction fee on Venmo, you should choose a credit card. However, if you don’t need to earn rewards and want to avoid credit card transaction fees, you should use a bank account.

Does Capital One work with Venmo?

In general, Capital One credit cards treat Venmo as cash advances, so you’ll want to steer clear of using Capital One credit cards for Venmo transactions.
