When it comes to luxury airport lounge locations, it’s hard to beat the quality and consistency of American Express Centurion Lounges.
Since launching in 2013, they have had a somewhat limited footprint, with current locations in only 9 airports. Over the past few years, however, American Express has been regularly adding at least a couple new Centurion Lounges each year.
Today it was announced that the next new Centurion Lounge will be located in New York City in JFK Airport’s Terminal 4 and is expected to open in early 2019.
Not only will it be the newest lounge in the collection, but the JFK location will be the largest American Express Centurion Lounge in the world.
Why choose Terminal 4 at JFK for the new lounge? According to Josh McKay, Amex’s vice president and general manager of Global Benefits and Services, it’s wasn’t a very tough choice.
“Terminal 4 specifically is JFK’s largest terminal, serving more than 21 million travelers each year and it is one of the most active air terminals in the United States, making it the perfect location for The Centurion Lounge at JFK,” he said.
McKay also added, “New York City is the number one destination and origin for our Platinum Card Members’ air bookings with Amex Travel, and we’ve actually seen a 29% increase in air travel through NYC amongst these Card Members in the past year.”
By adding this lounge at JFK, American Express believes (and is most definitely correct) that they are responding to the needs of their customers.
JFK Centurion Lounge Details
As mentioned above, the new Centurion Lounge at JFK will be the largest in the world. The planned lounge will be 2 stories with a total of 15,000 square feet of space. Huge walls of windows will provide fantastic views of airport operations and be great for planespotting.
Expected amenities for the JFK lounge include:
- Free high-end food offerings
- Complimentary alcoholic drinks
- Premium restrooms
- Shower suites
- High-speed Wi-Fi
Additional details on the available amenities will be announced closer to when the lounge opens. American Express has even said to expect some special new features at this location, but they haven’t given any suggestion of what those may be. We will just have to wait and see.
How to Access Centurion Lounges
Centurion Lounges have strict entry requirements; access is given only to people who hold certain American Express cards. There are no memberships available or access through any large lounge programs like Priority Pass.
The guest entry policy was updated last year to limit the number of guests allowed into the lounge with each cardmember. As a Platinum cardmember, you can now bring in only 2 guests free of charge, even if you are a family traveling with young children. As a Centurion cardmember, you can still bring in your immediate family or 2 guests. Additional guest passes can be purchased for $50 each.

A new Centurion Lounge at JFK is great news for international travelers and domestic travelers alike, especially those who live or frequently find themselves on the East Coast.
Yes, there has been a Centurion Lounge at LaGuardia Airport for some time…but if you are flying out of NYC on an international award ticket, you’re probably going out of JFK. If you are on a connecting flight through New York, that probably goes through JFK as well.
JFK Airport itself is often quite a mess of operations. The new Centurion Lounge will be in Terminal 4, and there is no good way to get there from other terminals without passing through security when coming and going.
However, if you have enough time to change terminals or are already in Terminal 4, you will soon have a wonderful new place to relax, refresh, and enjoy a free meal.
Those of us here at Upgraded Points will certainly be counting down the days until the new JFK Centurion Lounge opens!
