Booking an Airbnb or Vrbo stay? Both platforms offer vacation rentals as alternatives to hotel bookings. In addition to short-term rentals, you can also book experiences or long-term rentals.

You can earn credit card points whether you use Airbnb or Vrbo, but neither of these platforms falls under traditional hotel categories. Some cards specifically earn bonus points with vacation rentals, and others earn a flat rate or offer bonus rewards for travel purchases.

This guide covers the best credit cards for booking Airbnb or Vrbo stays, including cards that earn bonus points on eligible bookings.

Quick Overview of the Best Credit Cards for Airbnb and Vrbo Stays

Airbnb and Vrbo bookings can earn rewards differently depending on the card you use. Airbnb has neither a co-branded credit card nor a loyalty program. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ($95 annual fee) is the only major card with an explicit vacation rental bonus category, earning 3x points on stays booked directly with Airbnb and Vrbo.

The One Key+™ Card ($99 annual fee) is the strongest Vrbo-specific option, earning OneKeyCash that redeems at 1 cent apiece against future Vrbo bookings. The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card ($395 annual fee) carries a $300 annual Capital One Travel credit that is valid on vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel.

For cards that earn on both platforms, see the comparison table below.

Is There an Airbnb or Vrbo Credit Card?

Airbnb has no co-branded credit card, no loyalty program, and no elite status. Unlike hotel chains, it does not partner with a bank to issue a card, so there is no way to earn Airbnb-branded rewards or work toward status tiers by booking stays.

Vrbo is different. Its closest equivalent to a co-branded card is the One Key program and the 2 cards tied to it, the One Key+ card and the One Key card. One Key spans Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo, and both cards earn 3% OneKeyCash on eligible bookings across those 3 brands (Source: Vrbo).

OneKeyCash redeems at 1 cent toward future Vrbo stays, which makes the program most useful for travelers who book vacation rentals regularly. See the comparison table above for cards that earn on both Airbnb and Vrbo rather than only within the Expedia Group ecosystem.

How Airbnb and Vrbo Bookings Are Coded

How a card treats an Airbnb or Vrbo charge determines whether you earn a bonus. Coding varies by issuer and can differ between the 2 platforms.

  • Airbnb and Vrbo are not coded as hotels, so hotel bonus categories usually do not apply.
  • A few cards treat vacation rentals as a bonus category. The Chase Sapphire Preferred card earns 3x on stays booked directly with Airbnb and Vrbo, and the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey includes vacation rentals in their travel category.
  • Most other travel cards pay their general travel rate, and cards without a travel category pay the base rate.
  • Bookings made through a portal such as Capital One Travel can earn a higher rate than booking directly.

What To Look for in a Credit Card for Airbnb or Vrbo Stays

With no vacation rental category on most cards, the goal is to earn the highest rate the card offers on these bookings. Start with any card that offers a clear vacation-rental or general-travel bonus, since that is the highest rate available on Airbnb and Vrbo.

The definition of travel varies by bank, so confirm how each issuer defines it before assuming a booking will earn a bonus. Once travel categories are exhausted, the next best option is a strong flat-rate card that pays the same rate on every purchase. After earning rates, weigh travel benefits that fit your trips, such as trip protections, rental car coverage, and application fee credits for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

How We Selected the Best Credit Cards for Airbnb and Vrbo Stays

Upgraded Points evaluated each card on how it earns on Airbnb and Vrbo bookings, its annual fee and welcome offer, and the travel benefits most relevant to booking a stay. Each card was scored using our rating methodology, which weighs earning rates, redemption value, benefits, and fees.

Final Thoughts

The best card for a vacation rental depends on the platform: The Chase Sapphire Preferred card earns 3x on Airbnb and Vrbo stays booked directly, and the One Key+ and One Key cards earn 3% on Vrbo through OneKeyCash. Vrbo has a card ecosystem built around the One Key program. Airbnb has none, so Airbnb bookings come down to finding the best general-travel or flat-rate card. The comparison table above lays out the earning rates for both platforms side by side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Airbnb considered travel for credit cards?

Yes. Airbnb and Vrbo are generally coded as travel, so a card that pays a bonus on general travel will usually earn that bonus on these bookings. Coding can vary by issuer, so confirm how a specific card defines travel.

Which credit card is best for Airbnb?

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card is the strongest option for Airbnb, since it earns 3x points on stays booked directly. Other travel and flat-rate cards earn at their general rates. See the comparison table above for how each card earns on Airbnb.

Which credit card is best for Vrbo?

The One Key+ card earns 3% OneKeyCash on Vrbo that redeems at 1 cent toward future Vrbo stays. The $0-annual-fee One Key card earns the same 3% on Vrbo bookings. The Chase Sapphire Preferred card is the best option outside the Expedia Group ecosystem, at 3x points.

Can you use Chase points for Airbnb?

Chase points cannot be redeemed directly for most Airbnb stays. Some Airbnb properties are also listed on other travel sites that Chase Travel supports, where points may be redeemed. Chase points can typically be redeemed for Airbnb gift cards at 1 cent per point, though other redemptions often yield more value.

Do Airbnb and Vrbo bookings count toward a credit card welcome offer?

Yes. Airbnb and Vrbo purchases count as regular spending toward a card’s minimum spending requirement, the same as any other purchase. They count whether or not the booking earns a bonus category rate.

Does the Chase Sapphire Preferred 3x rate apply to Airbnb as well as Vrbo?

Yes. The Chase Sapphire Preferred card earns 3x points on vacation homes booked directly with Airbnb, Vrbo, and several other rental platforms. Bookings made through Chase Travel earn 5x instead.

Does Airbnb charge a foreign transaction fee?

Airbnb charges a 3% currency conversion fee when the currency of your booking differs from your home currency (Source: Airbnb Help Center). This is separate from any foreign transaction fee your credit card may charge. For example, a U.S.-based guest booking a property priced in euros would pay the 3% conversion fee. The charge is handled on Airbnb’s end.
