Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is laid out a semi-circle shape consisting of 3 terminals and 5 concourses. The airport road system loops around the hourly/daily parking garage running in between parking and the terminal buildings.

Terminals 1 and 2 and the International Terminal are not connected outside of the secure area but are connected via the concourses within the secure area, making flight connections easy for passengers.

The TRAX light rail station that serves Salt Lake City is situated at the south end of terminal 1, and the hourly/daily parking lot is directly accessible to visitors of Terminals 1 and 2 via 2 bridges on level 2.

Terminal 1

Salt Lake City International Airport Terminal 1
Salt Lake City International Airport Terminal 1. Image Credit: Salt Lake City International Airport

The ground level of Terminal 1 is where the ticketing desks and baggage claim are located. Passengers will also clear security on this level before proceeding into the secure area where a few shops and restaurants are located as well as escalators to the upper level.

Concourse G

Salt Lake City International Airport Terminal 1 Concourse G
Salt Lake City International Airport Terminal 1 Concourse G. Image Credit: Salt Lake City International Airport

Once passengers reach level 2, they need to take a right turn for Concourse G. The concourse has 8 gates numbered G1-G8 and a small selection of restaurants and shops. More shops can be found in the connector when you initially arrive on level 2 from the terminal, and there are a couple of ATMs available.

Concourse F

Salt Lake City International Airport Terminal 1 Concourse F
Salt Lake City International Airport Terminal 1 Concourse F. Image Credit: Salt Lake City International Airport

Concourse F has 22 gates numbered F1-F22, and these are split across 2 levels. When passengers arrive on level 2 from the terminal, they need to take a left past the shops and then right into the concourse.

There are a few shops and restaurants in this half of the concourse, and close to gate F9 there are escalators that lead into the second section of the concourse on the lower level.

Gates F11-F22 are located on the lower level of the concourse, as well as some shops and restaurants and a pet relief area.

Terminal 2

Salt Lake City International Airport Terminal 2

Terminal 2 is located between Terminal 1 and the International Terminal. The ticketing desks are located on the ground level along with baggage claim, Starbucks, and access to ground transportation.

Escalators and elevators take passengers to the upper level where the security checkpoint and a bridge to the short-term parking garage are located. Once passengers have cleared security, they will arrive at a food court and shopping area, located in front of Concourse C.

Concourse C

Concourse C has 13 gates numbered C1-C13 and a small selection of restaurants and shops (with more available outside of the concourse entrance).

International Terminal/Concourse E

Salt Lake City International Airport International Terminal

The International Terminal is located on the western side of the airport and serves international and domestic flights. The lower level has Delta Air Lines ticketing desks — and once through security — a small selection of shops and restaurants and access to Concourse E.

The security checkpoint is located on the upper level where passengers can take a left at the restaurants and shops to access the escalators to Concourse E.

Passengers are currently transported by shuttle out to hardstands while the old gates are demolished due to the ongoing construction of a new terminal.

Concourse D

Salt Lake City International Airport Concourse D

Concourse D is directly ahead once passengers have cleared security and consists of 13 gates numbered D1-D13. The concourse has a small selection of shops and restaurants, including duty free.

Some flights into Concourse D will arrive via a hardstand with passengers shuttled to gate D10 for arrival procedures.

Inter-Terminal Transport

Walking

All of the concourses within the secure area are interlinked, so passengers do not have to exit and re-clear security for flight connections unless they are arriving on an international flight.

Passengers connecting outside of the secure area can walk along the public paths outside of the terminal buildings.

SLC Terminal Expansion Project

Salt Lake City International Airport Expansion Project

SLC is in the midst of a major expansion project, which will see a brand new terminal opening in September 2020. In addition to the terminal, a new gateway center and parking garage will be available, and flights will operate from the new south concourse.

Between 2021 and 2024, there will be the construction of a north concourse and the east side of the south concourse, along with the demolition of the old terminal buildings.

These new facilities will streamline the passenger journey with easier way-finding and state-of-the-art facilities.

Security and Customs at SLC

SLC has 3 security checkpoints — 1 in every terminal:

  • Terminal 1: open 24 hours
  • Terminal 2: open 4:30 a.m. to 1 a.m.
  • International Terminal: open as required for international flights

Passengers can check the security wait times for Terminals 1 and 2 on the airport’s website.

Hot Tip: According to our study, Salt Lake City International had the best average TSA security wait time of 9.1 minutes. Couple this with our best ways to get through TSA, and you’ll be on your journey in no time.

TSA PreCheck

TSA PreCheck lanes are available at the Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 checkpoints:

  • Terminal 1: 4:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Terminal 2: 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.

SLC has a PreCheck Enrollment Center located in Terminal 2, open 7:45 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. on weekdays.

Global Entry

SLC has Global Entry kiosks for expedited clearance of pre-approved passengers.

Conditionally approved applicants may arrange an interview at the airport’s Enrollment Center, located in the International Terminal. The Enrollment Center is open weekdays 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., and interviews must be arranged in advance.

SLC also participates in Enrollment on Arrival and conditionally approved applicants may opt to conduct their interview when arriving into SLC. Enrollment on Arrival is processed daily from 12:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Hot Tip: Considering Global Entry? These are some useful frequently asked questions about the program, and our expert answers on what to expect from the program.

CLEAR Security Program

CLEAR lanes are available at the Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 security checkpoints. These are open daily from 4 a.m. – 9 p.m. and enrollment is also possible at Terminal 1.

SLC Airport Lounges

Passengers have access to only 1 lounge at SLC — the Delta Sky Club. This is located in Concourse A, Level 2 east of the new Airport Plaza, and is open daily from 5 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Access is possible with a Sky Club membership or for eligible premium cabin passengers, eligible frequent flyers, or credit cardholders.

*Hours are subject to change without notice. Lounge access may be restricted at times due to capacity.

Hot Tip: Do you typically pay for day passes when flying from the airport? These are the best credit cards that give you complimentary lounge access.

Dining and Drinks at SLC Airport

There are over 30 restaurants, cafes, and food stations at SLC. Most are located inside the secure area within the concourses, but there are a few in the Terminal 1 and 2 food courts outside of the secure area.

Passengers can view a list of open restaurants on the airport’s website.

SLC Wi-Fi and Charging Stations

Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport for all guests and passengers. Users can connect by selecting “SLCAirport.wifi” from the available connections.

Charging Stations: Free charging stations are available throughout the terminals and within the connector between the terminal buildings.

Hot Tip: If you struggle for a Wi-Fi connection when traveling, then check out the best mobile Wi-Fi hotspots.

SLC Airport Lost and Found

Passengers who lose an item within the public areas of the airport or at security need to contact the airport lost and found office located on the mezzanine level of Terminal 1. The office is open weekdays from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Alternatively, passengers may browse items on the airport’s lost and found online gallery or submit a claim. This can be helpful if SLC isn’t your home base. If you’ve forgotten an item and your claim is approved, you can arranged to have the item shipped to you.

For items lost onboard an aircraft, passengers must contact the relevant airline.

Additional Airport Information

Information Services

SLC has information desks in Terminals 1 and 2 on the lower levels across from the baggage claim areas.

Children’s Play Areas

Small play areas can be found in Concourses C, F, and G. Unfortunately, these play areas weren’t enough to earn SLC a spot in the top 10 kid-friendly airports in the U.S.

Baby Facilities

SLC has nursing stations located:

  • Adjacent to the women’s restrooms within Terminal 2 and Concourses D and E
  • Concourse G, near gate G1
  • On the Concourse C and G connector

Traveling With a Pet

SLC has various pet relief areas located inside and outside of the secure areas:

  • Across the road from Terminal 1 outside of the parking garage
  • Across the road from Terminal 2 outside of the parking garage
  • Concourse E, near gates E66-E67
  • Concourse F, near gate F13

Unfortunately, SLC didn’t earn a stop of the best pet-friendly airports in the U.S.

Duty Free

SLC has 2 duty free stores — 1 located on the upper level of Terminal 1 and the other in Concourse D.

Smoking Areas

Smoking is only permitted in designated areas outside of the terminals, at least 25 feet from the building.

Money

SLC has ATMs outside of the secure areas of Terminals 1 and 2 and in the International Terminal. They are also located throughout the secure areas of the concourses.

A currency exchange kiosk is located in Concourse D near gate D2.

Travel to and From SLC Airport

Transport Options

Train

TRAX Light Rail: Services operate to/from the airport every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 20 minutes on weekends. SLC is on the green line, and passengers can reach the city center and suburbs of Salt Lake County. The TRAX station is located next to the southern end of Terminal 1.

Bus

UTA Buses: Bus route 453 runs between Salt Lake City and Tooele and route 454 between Salt Lake City and Grantsville. Both services stop at the airport and offer a limited weekday service. Route 551 operates in the mornings from the airport to the International Center and from the International Center to the airport in the afternoon.

Buses run from the south end of Terminal 1 and adjacent to baggage claim 8, outside of Terminal 2. No bus services run at weekends or on public holidays.

Bus and light rail fares are $2.50 per one way ticket.

Shuttles and Limousines

SLC recommends these shuttle providers that have booking facilities at the airport:

  • Alta Shuttle: 866-274-0225
  • Express Shuttle Canyon Transportation: 801-596-1600
  • Yellow Cab: 801-521-2100

Transportation can be arranged in advance or on arrival at the airport in the baggage claim areas of Terminal 1 or Terminal 2. Shuttle companies are also positioned outside door 7 at Terminal 1 or door 11 at Terminal 2.

Taxis

Taxis do operate from the airport but have attracted controversy over lack of pricing regulation. Taxis are often not metered, and passengers have reported being charged extortionate rates when not agreed at the start of the journey.

The airport states that maximum rates for specific zones are enforced ($25 for journeys within 500 East and $30 outside of 500 East), but some passengers have reported being charged these maximum limits for just a few miles. Outside of these zones, there is no regulation at all, so agree on the rate before you leave!

Ride Services

App-based ride services such as Uber or Lyft are permitted to operate to/from SLC. Drivers may pick-up passengers from outside Terminals 1 or 2 from the middle lanes outside of baggage claim.

Directions by Car

Arriving From Downtown Salt Lake City

Official Airport Parking

Short-Term Parking

Hourly and daily parking is available in the parking garage opposite the terminal buildings. Hourly parking is on level 1 and costs $2 for the first 30 minutes with $1 charged for every 20 minutes thereafter.

Daily parking is on levels 1, 2, and 3 and costs $35 per day.

Premium reserved parking is available on level 1 for passengers that book in advance. Parking bays are the closest to the terminals and drivers also benefit from dedicated entry and a concierge service. Daily premium reserved parking costs $55 per day.

Long-Term Parking

Economy parking is located further away from the terminals with a courtesy shuttle service operating to and from the parking lot. Daily parking costs $10 with the ability to reserve a space in advance for an additional $3 per day.

Hot Tip: Electric charging points are located in all parking lots if you’ve got an electric car to charge up while you’re away. 4 dual ports are available in the economy parking lot, 1 dual-port on level 1 of the hourly parking garage, and 3 dual ports on level 2.

Family and friends picking up passengers may use the park and wait lot on Terminal Drive, just south of Terminal 1. As an alternative to waiting for a phone call from the passenger, the lot has large screens that indicate when a flight is “ready for pick-up.”

Off-Site and Hotel Parking

Long-term parking at SLC is reasonably priced, but you can get it cheaper if you’re prepared to park a little further away at an off-site parking lot.

Daily parking starts at just $5.75 when booking with a third party site such as airportparkingreservations.com. Most of these external sites provide courtesy shuttle services to/from the airport, so you don’t need to worry about transportation.

Parking for Passengers With Disabilities

Over 40 disabled parking bays are available in the parking garage opposite the terminals and closest to the entrances/exits. Parking is charged at a reduced rate of $10 per day. Bays are also available in the economy parking next to all the shuttle bus stops.

Passengers can contact 801-575-2887 for parking assistance.

SLC does not have any hotels on airport property, but the closest is only 1.5 miles away. Most of the hotels closest to the airport are 2- or 3-star, so if you’re looking for a little more luxury, you’ll need to venture into the city.

Nearly all hotels offer courtesy shuttle services to and from the airport, so even if you’re a little further away, you’ll still have easy access to the airport and could even book an accommodation and parking package.

Final Thoughts

Salt Lake City International Airport New Arrivals and Departures
Salt Lake City International Airport’s new terminal (rendering). Image Credit: Salt Lake City International Airport

Despite ongoing construction work since 2014, SLC has maintained strong on-time performance for departures, and the airport’s efficiency should only improve with the unveiling of its new facilities.

The new linear concourses will provide convenient access to passengers to connect inside the secure area and allows for expansion if a third concourse is required for future growth.

  1. Consolidated rental car facilities have been located on the first floor of the parking garage, for a number of years now. No shuttle is needed.

The International Terminal and Concourse E have been demolished.

The first phase of the New SLC Airport opens on September 15, 2020, with Delta Airlines moving their operations over that day. Other airlines will make the transition later in the year.

      Hi Matt,

Thanks for flagging the rental car information, we’ve updated the article. Once the airport has updated its website and maps to reflect the new terminal, we’ll also be updating our article.

      Thanks!
