Of course, the cost of a hotel room can vary throughout the year and day by day, so these numbers are just an example of what you could expect when traveling during a peak season for your destination. Don’t give up just because the first dates you enter into the Wyndham booking tool don’t give up the redemption you’re looking for — moving your dates around by a week or even a day or two could reveal a hidden treasure!

Wyndham’s Misadventures

So why, exactly, are points-and-miles people wary of hoarding Wyndham points?

The company hasn’t had the best luck — or always made the best decisions. Besides a series of scandals in the 1990s and early 2000s (including one that sent its executives to prison for fishy accounting), the company now known as Wyndham Hotels & Resorts has had a love-hate relationship with its loyalists and earned notoriety for abruptly making major changes and then changing course, leaving points holders with whiplash.

In 2015, Wyndham experimented with a flat 15,000-point redemption for any stay, meaning that a night in the company’s most high-end hotels costs the same number of points as at its lowest-end hotels. The company had intended an upheaval in the hotel points landscape that would see casual and budget-minded points collectors flocking to them. But the results weren’t good: Members saw themselves paying Dolce or Wyndham Grand redemption rates for a Super 8 or a Days Inn instead of the other way around. Wyndham returned to a tier system in 2019.

Another example was in 2016. Wyndham made a play for Starwood Preferred Guest members with a generous promotion to those who switched to Wyndham Rewards. But the company had to cancel it before it even began, blaming fraud. (Note to marketing executives: It’s easy to fake screenshots.)

Then there’s the fact that it’s so hard to earn Wyndham points and that they expire after 18 months with no activity. They also expire after 4 years even if you are active, with no extensions allowed.

All in all, it’s not completely surprising that travelers might be skeptical of the long-term value of focusing on accumulating Wyndham points.

Wyndham Rewards is the loyalty brand for Wyndham Hotels. You can earn Wyndham points by staying at a Wyndham hotel, using a Wyndham-branded credit card, or transferring miles from Capital One or Citi.

You can then redeem Wyndham Rewards points for hotel stays, including at Caesars Entertainment partner hotels like Caesars, Harrah’s, and Bally’s.

One of the great things about the Wyndham Rewards program is that the award chart is as simple as it gets, even if everything isn’t still exactly 15,000 points. Every hotel falls into 1 of 3 tiers:

On the shores of Giang Vo Lake in Vietnam, the Dolce by Wyndham Hanoi Golden Lake is a modern hotel with first-class amenities. This hotel is convenient for transportation and local attractions. You’ll find easy access to Hanoi Railway Station, Noi Bai International Airport (HAN), the Ho Chi Minh Museum, the Temple of Literature, and the Vietnam National Convention Center.

In case you haven’t heard, Portugal is the new country of choice for Americans burned out by the U.S. lifestyle. But you don’t have to become an expat to soak in the Portuguese sun. This hotel, nestled below the Archeiro and Socorro mountains, is about a 30-minute drive from Lisbon and 20 minutes from the beaches on the Silver Coast.

Guests can enjoy amenities like the 18-hole golf course, luxury spa, fitness center, and indoor and outdoor pools. Each room has a balcony and fantastic views of the lush Portuguese countryside. If exploring on horseback appeals to you, stop by the Equestrian Center Miguel Athayde, just minutes from the hotel.

It sits on its own stretch of beach about half an hour east of San Juan Airport (SJU).
