How Does Amex’s No Preset Spending Limit Work?

Most card users are accustomed to having a predetermined credit limit on their cards. For example, if you are approved for a credit card with a $5,000 credit limit, you can charge up to $5,000 on the card, after which any additional charges may be declined.

American Express still sets a range for what it will allow you to spend. This is based on factors such as your monthly spending patterns, payment history, credit score, and stated income. They both offer best-in-class airport lounge access, up to a $200 annual airline fee credit, access to Amex’s Fine Hotels + Resorts program and The Hotel Collection, up to $600 in statement credits for eligible prepaid bookings through AmexTravel.com (The Hotel Collection requires a 2-night minimum stay), Hilton Honors, Marriott Bonvoy, and Leaders Club elite status, travel protections, and purchase protection. As with to the personal cards, enrollment may be required for some benefits.

But the Amex Business Platinum card does have key differences that small business owners might find compelling, with benefits like up to a $1,150 annual Dell credit (up to $150 in credits annually and an additional $1,000 when you spend $5,000 or more on U.S. Dell purchases), up to in $360 annual Indeed credit, up to $200 in Hilton statement credit, $250 in annual Adobe credit (when you spend $600 or more on U.S. Adobe purchases), and up to $120 in annual wireless phone services credit.

There is the option to have up to 99 employee cards. For the metal Employee Graphite Business Cash Unlimited Cards, it is $95 per year for the first 5 cards and $95 for each thereafter; plastic Employee Business Expense Cards have no annual fee (rates & fees).

Final Thoughts

Some of the very best cards that American Express offers are cards with no preset spending limit. While it is easy to see how someone might confuse no preset spending limit with no limit at all, the fact is that no matter how much you spend or how large your income is, each cardholder has some sort of variable limit.

That said, it’s unlikely you’ll reach the limit where Amex begins denying further purchases unless you’re behind on previous payments or make a relatively large purchase out of nowhere. You can always use the spending power tool to double-check whether you’ll have any issues making a purchase on a no-preset-limit card.
