Huge Amex Membership Rewards Targeted Offers

Amex Targeted Offer

American Express has been running a lot of promotional targeted offers lately. Last week, we wrote about a couple of great offers for those who have the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express. Today it’s time to talk about 2 new offers for earning bonus American Express Membership Rewards points.

Both of these offers were sent by email from American Express. If you haven’t seen an email, it might be worth your time to double check your trash and spam folders to make sure an email didn’t slip through the cracks.

The Amex Bonus Offers

American Express just released targeted offers for 3 cards. Let’s dive into the details of each offer.

50,000 Bonus Points for Some Business Owners

Business Platinum 50k
This targeted offer is higher than some sign-up bonuses for new cards, and it is a great way to increase your Membership Rewards balance.

The first targeted offer was sent to some folks who have The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN.

The terms are fairly simple. Earn 40,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $5,000 and another 10,000 points when you spend an additional $5,000. This spending must be on qualifying purchases on your card and completed between July 15 and October 15.

Perhaps the best part of this offer (other than the bonus points) is that you don’t even have to register! They have already added it to the cards for targeted members—all you have to do is spend the required amounts.

Hot Tip: Make sure you know the best ways to earn Membership Rewards so you get the most bang for your buck.

The first half of the bonus is far more valuable than the second half, as you get 40,000 points for just for spending $5,000. That means you will receive 45,000 points when you hit the spending threshold, which is equal to 9X points per dollar!

This can get even better if you can spend the full $5,000 in 1 transaction, since The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN earns 1.5X points per dollar on transactions of at least $5,000. That would give you a total of 47,500 points for just a single transaction. That is more than a lot of sign-up bonuses for new cards!

So, just 1 purchase of $5,000 for your business would earn you a total of 47,500 points for that single transaction.

20,000 Points for Adding Authorized Users

Authorized User Bonus
This targeted bonus asks cardholders to add authorized users to their accounts. If they do, they will receive 5,000 points for each user added.

The second offer was sent to American Express personal cardholders. Select members who have either The Platinum Card® from American Express or the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express were sent an offer for up to 20,000 bonus points when they add authorized users to their account.

Members who add authorized users through the link provided in the email will receive 5,000 Membership Rewards points for each of the first 4 new additional cards they add.

To earn the bonus points, each of the new cardmembers must spend $500 within the first 3 months of getting the card.

Additional cardholders are a bit pricey for The Platinum Card® from American Express, with a charge of $175 for the first 3 and $175 for each additional one after that. This can still be a good deal if all of the users take advantage of the benefits that come along with the card.

However, a cheaper way to take advantage of this deal for cardholders of The Platinum Card® from American Express would be to add authorized users as Gold Card from American Express cardholders.

There is no fee to add Gold Card from American Express authorized users to your account, and the terms of the promotional offer specifically include this option.

Hot Tip: It’s easy to transfer Membership Rewards so you can redeem them for some awesome flights.

Not Targeted?

These new offers led to several cardholders getting upset that they weren’t targeted. Some people took to Twitter to express their dissatisfaction directly to American Express.

When a company extends targeted offers to a select group, it walks a fine line. Those who receive the offer are often excited and become more loyal to the company, while those who aren’t can feel left out and become less loyal.

So, how you do make sure you are not one of the people feeling left out? Unfortunately, you can’t with this offer. Although there is no way to make sure you are targeted for a specific offer, these offers are sent out somewhat regularly, so there is still hope that you will be targeted for the next one that comes along.

To increase your chances of being targeted for a spending bonus on your Amex credit cards, go into your account communication settings and agree to receive promotional emails.

This will give American Express permission to email you about promotions, including lucrative big spending bonuses for tons of extra points.

Final Thoughts

If you were one of the lucky ones to be targeted for the 50,000 bonus Membership Rewards points promotion, make sure you keep track of your spending. If you fall short of the $5,000 or $10,000 threshold (depending on which level of bonus you are going for), you won’t receive any bonus points at all.

If you were targeted for the bonus points for adding additional cards to one of your accounts, be sure to add them before August 30, or you will get no bonus points. Take screenshots and record the names and when you add them in case there are any questions about you meeting the terms of the offer.

With so many amazing ways to use Membership Rewards, you certainly don’t want to miss out on a great opportunity to easily earn a whole lot of points!
