What Is a Metal Credit Card?
Metal credit cards are essentially the same as all other credit cards, with the notable exception being that, instead of being made from plastic, they are made from metal.
They function identically to all other credit cards, allowing you to pay via swipe, tap, or chip.
It’s common for metal credit cards to come with an annual fee, and in addition to metal cards being more durable than plastic cards, many cardholders feel that the metal finish feels much more premium than their plastic counterparts.
What To Look for in a Metal Credit Card
Some metal credit cards weigh more than others. But that doesn’t mean you should just look for the heaviest credit card out there.
Instead, look for the best overall value in a credit card. In addition to considering the aesthetic appeal and feel of the credit card, it’s important to choose the card that fits your situation the best.
For example, the products that are best for you will be different if you’re looking for a low-annual-fee card with decent rewards than if you’re looking for an ultra-premium card with the best travel perks in the world.
If you’re a frequent traveler, consider a card that offers the best luxury travel benefits available, such as lounge access, hotel credits, and access to benefits including free breakfast or room upgrades.
We’ll show you the best metal cards with lots of rewards and benefits, looking at personal cards first, followed by business cards.
How To Get a Metal Credit Card
You don’t need to do anything special in order to get a metal credit card. All you have to do is be approved for a credit card that comes in metal.
While it is true that some metal credit cards can be slightly harder to be approved for than some plastic cards, if you have a credit score of 670 or higher, you have reasonably good approval odds for most metal credit cards.
Advantages of Metal Credit Cards
There are some obvious pros of metal credit cards, including:
Metal cards are more durable than plastic credit cards.
Metal cards have a premium feel because of their style and weight.
Metal cards can offer better rewards and benefits than plastic cards, albeit at the expense of a large annual fee.
Why Have a Metal Credit Card?
Put simply, the only reason to have a metal credit card is if the card itself makes sense for you. If so, then then the fact that it is metal can be a nice bonus. On the other hand, it makes little sense to select a card whose perks, rewards, and protections don’t match what you are looking for in a new card purely because it is metal.
How We Selected Our List of Best Metal Credit Cards
There are several factors we considered when making our choices for the best metal credit cards. Some of these factors included travel benefits, rewards, credit card bonus offers, fees, and redemption value.
At the end of the day, the overall point of the featured cards is the rewards they offer. Given that, a card is not likely to be a good option if it is metal but does not offer helpful bonus categories to help cardholders earn more on their everyday purchases.
Welcome Bonus Offers
While this is a one-time benefit, a great welcome bonus offer is an excellent want to jump-start your rewards balance. It’s even more so when you consider that many premium metal credit cards have lucrative offers.
Fees
As we mentioned, it’s quite common for metal credit cards to charge annual fees. That said, you also want to be mindful of any other fees the card might charge, like foreign transaction fees or authorized user fees.
Redemption Value
Once you’ve earned your points or miles, be certain that you’ll be able to redeem those rewards for good value and that you have multiple redemption options. This is why we give preference to cards that earn flexible rewards, letting you redeem for cash-back, via a travel portal, or through select travel transfer partners.
Overall, the space for metal credit cards has become increasingly crowded. A lot of metal credit cards offered today are effectively vanity items with few to no benefits.
So, to get the best of both worlds in terms of aesthetics and utility, consider the cards outlined in this list. By sticking to the cards on the lists above (depending on whether you’re looking for a personal or business card), you’ll come out ahead.
Hopefully, you found this guide useful and will be adding 1 or even a few metal credit cards to your wallet!
