Buying furniture can be a daunting task, especially if you plan on spending a substantial amount of money and are investing time into research.

And luckily, your home improvement endeavor doesn’t have to include an additional layer of researching each credit card out there, because here, you’ll find the best cards to put your furniture purchases on.

So whether you’re looking for a credit card that offers attractive rewards, a longer 0% financing period, or a large spending limit, we’ve got the inside scoop.

Before we do that, though, let’s take a look at what features of a credit card you should be focusing on.

Hide SummaryShow Summary

What To Look for in a Credit Card for Buying Furniture

Generally, when you make a large purchase, you should focus on getting good purchase protection because not doing so can mean the difference between losing out on thousands of dollars without any consumer protections and breathing a sigh of relief when you realize that your credit card has you covered.

Additionally, you’ll want to earn as many points as possible — there are a few credit cards that offer bonus cash-back specifically at home improvement stores or department stores where you can purchase furniture, but there aren’t a whole lot of credit cards with lucrative points structures.

That’s why one of the biggest focuses of the rewards aspect is to use a credit card that offers generous rewards on all purchases, as opposed to just home improvement and/or furniture.

And lastly, one of the most important factors is to be able to access a high credit limit; alternatively, you can focus on putting your spending on a card with no preset spending limit* so you don’t even have to worry about a credit limit.

Let’s talk about the best personal credit cards for buying furniture!

Why We Like This Card

The Citi Custom Cash® Card is inventive when it comes to cash-back credit cards. Instead of earning a set amount of cash-back on predetermined bonus categories, the Citi Custom Cash card earns 5% cash-back on your highest eligible spend category each billing cycle, without an annual fee.

Thanks to that unique perk, you’ll never need to worry about whether you’re using the right card for the right purchase, as your Citi Custom Cash card will always pay you 5% back on whichever category you end up spending the most on each month.

Pros & Cons

  • Multiple redemption options
Cons
  • Your 5% category is limited to $500 in spend ($25 in cash-back) each month

Our favorite credit card for buying furniture is one of the newer entrants to the credit card scene: the Citi Custom Cash card.

At first glance, you might not think that there’s anything particularly special about this card, but we are writing to convince you otherwise!

To be specific, the Citi Custom Cash card is definitively the best credit card to put small furniture purchases on. We’ll get into that soon.

Let’s start off with the generous welcome bonus offered — Citi doesn’t usually offer welcome bonuses on no-annual-fee credit cards, so this is a much-appreciated change-up. On top of that, you’ll be able to access a 0% introductory APR on both balance transfers and purchases. Regular APR, as shown in the table above, will apply after the introductory period.

Then, you’ll earn a whopping 5% cash-back on purchases in your top eligible spend category each billing cycle (up to the first $500 spent). You’ll then earn 1% cash-back after that, as well as an unlimited 1% cash-back on all other purchases.

But let’s dissect that 5% cash-back benefit. If you study it closely, you’ll find that there’s an incredible list of eligible categories:

  • Drugstores
  • Fitness clubs
  • Gas stations
  • Grocery stores
  • Home improvement stores
  • Live entertainment
  • Restaurants
  • Select streaming services
  • Select transit
  • Select travel

So you can make up to $500 in purchases at home improvement stores every month to max out the 5% cash-back, which would net you 2,500 ThankYou Points.

The Citi Custom Cash card also offers zero fraud liability, a complimentary FICO credit score, access to Citi Entertainment, and more.

Why We Like Earning Citi ThankYou Rewards Points

When you put your spending on the Citi Custom Cash card, your rewards are earned in the form of ThankYou Points.

By itself, the Citi Custom Cash card’s rewards can only be redeemed for direct deposit, statement credits, checks, gift cards, travel, and Shop with Points at Amazon.

But if you couple the Citi Custom Cash card with a card like the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card, you can unlock the world of Citi ThankYou Rewards. Simply put, you can transfer your points to travel partners and book some amazing flights for top-notch value.

According to our valuations, Citi ThankYou Points are worth around 1.6 cents each, transforming your 5% cash-back to an 8% return on spending with a ThankYou Rewards credit card!

Why We Like This Card

The Citi Double Cash® Card has long been one of the top cash-back credit cards on the market, and the card now has the ability to earn Citi ThankYou Points!

This means that cardholders of the Double Cash card will now earn 2% on every purchase with unlimited 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for those purchases. Cash back is earned in the form of ThankYou Points. This means each billing cycle, you will earn 1 ThankYou point per $1 spent on purchases and an additional ThankYou point for every $1 paid on your purchase balance as long as there is a corresponding balance in your Purchase Tracker.

Citi has turned the Double Cash card into a top choice for those who are looking for an everyday, no-fuss credit card.

Our runner-up credit card is another Citi credit card: the Double Cash card. With this underrated credit card, you’ll earn 2% cash-back (1% at the time of purchase and 1% when you pay it off, earned as ThankYou Points) with no caps!

Chase Ultimate Rewards

The Freedom Unlimited card is our favorite credit card for everyday purchases due to its generous rewards structure and the ability to convert rewards to Ultimate Rewards points with the right credit card pairing.

Your purchases will earn cash-back according to this structure:

  • 5% cash-back on travel purchased through the Chase travel portal
  • 5% cash-back on Lyft purchases through March 31, 2025
  • 3% cash-back on dining purchases
  • 3% cash-back on drugstore purchases
  • 1.5% cash-back on all other purchases

Your furniture purchases would fall into the 1.5% cash-back category. But, to entice you even more, you can convert your cash-back to Ultimate Rewards points if you have any of the following Ultimate Rewards credit cards: Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve®, or Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card.

If you have any of these Ultimate Rewards cards, your 5%, 3%, and 1.5% cash-back can be converted to 5x, 3x, and 1.5x Ultimate Rewards points, respectively. That would double your rewards on furniture purchases to a value of 3%, instead of 1.5%!

Even more, the Freedom Unlimited card has a 0% introductory APR period for purchases and balance transfers. Regular APR, as shown in the table above, will apply after the introductory period.

You’ll even enjoy purchase protection, extended warranty, secondary rental car insurance, fraud protection, and zero liability protection.

Why We Like Earning Chase Ultimate Rewards Points

With the Freedom Unlimited card alone, your redemptions are worth a flat 1 cent per point, regardless of whether you use them for cash-back, Shop at Amazon, gift cards, or for bookings made through the Chase travel portal.

With an Ultimate Rewards card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, you’ll open up a new world of possibilities, including the Chase transfer partners that you can use for luxury flights and hotels. These redemptions allow you to get upwards of 10 cents per point of value!

Capital One Miles

The Capital One Venture card is our next-best option, and it happens to be one of our favorite Capital One personal credit cards. As Capital One’s premium, mid-market credit card, the Capital One Venture card has a lot going for it.

You’ll earn unlimited 2x Capital One miles without any caps on all purchases you make.

You’ll also be able to make use of the Global Entry or TSA PreCheck fee credit and travel insurance. You can also access Capital One Lounges or Plaza Premium Lounges twice per year with this card.

The protections include secondary car rental insurance, lost luggage insurance, roadside dispatch, travel assistance, purchase security, extended warranty, zero fraud liability, and more.

Why We Like Earning Capital One Miles

Capital One Miles is one of the few transferable rewards programs. You can use your Capital One miles for statement credits, travel purchases through Capital One Travel, experiences, gift cards, merchandise, and more.

But the best way to use your miles is to leverage transfer partners for premium cabin flights like SWISS Air business class and ANA first class.

Just remember that Capital One’s transfer ratios will depend on the transfer partner. Most are 1:1, while a couple are 2:1.5 or 2:1, so keep that in mind.

We value Capital One miles at around 1.8 cents each, so earning 2x Capital One miles is equal to a 3.6% return on spend.

Hot Tip: Check to see if you’re eligible for a welcome bonus offer of up to 125k (or 150k) points with the Amex Platinum card. The current public offer is 80,000 points. (This targeted offer was independently researched and may not be available to all applicants.)

Our next card recommendation is the Amex Platinum card. It’s an especially good fit for you if you need:

  1. High spending power
  2. Luxury travel benefits
  3. Ultra-premium rewards

You will earn up to 5x points as follows:

  • 5x points on flights purchased directly with the airline or at AmexTravel.com (up to $500,000 per year)
  • 5x points on prepaid hotels booked with AmexTravel.com
  • 1x points everywhere else

When you have the Amex Platinum card, you’ll enjoy these phenomenal travel benefits (note that some benefits require enrollment through your American Express account):

Even more, you’ll get over $1,400 in statement credits, including up to $200 airline fee credit, up to $200 prepaid hotel credit, up to $240 in digital entertainment credits, up to $200 annually in Uber Cash towards rides or Eats orders in the U.S., $300 in Equinox credits, $100 in Saks Fifth Avenue credits (distributed as 2 $50 statement credits), $199 CLEAR Plus credit, a $12.95 monthly Walmart+ credit, and cell phone protection insurance.

Of course, you’ll enjoy purchase protection, extended warranty, excellent travel insurance, and no foreign transaction fees (rates & fees).

Why We Like Earning Amex Membership Rewards Points

The points you earn with the Amex Platinum card are called Amex Membership Rewards points.

In our eyes, Amex points are the most valuable transferable rewards points. They’re most valuable when you use the Amex transfer partners for aspirational flights like Emirates first class or Lufthansa first class.

You can also use your points for gift cards, AmexTravel.com bookings, Amazon purchases, statement credits, and charity, but you’ll almost always get poor value.

Hot Tip: If you plan to purchase furniture from Walmart, or Amazon and use their branded credit cards, you could earn up to 5% cash-back. If you’re shopping at Target or Lowe’s with their branded credit cards, you can receive a 5% discount on your purchase. Other store-specific credit cards, like those offered by Ashley Furniture HomeStore, Costco, The Home Depot, JCPenney, Sam’s Club, and Sears may offer special financing but not as much cash-back (if any) as other cards mentioned on our list.

Chase Ultimate Rewards

The Ink Business Cash card is a fantastic credit card if you’re making furniture purchases at office supply stores — but let’s be specific.

After you earn a great welcome bonus, you’ll earn up to 5% cash-back in rewards that can be converted to Ultimate Rewards points at a 1% to 1x ratio:

  • 5% cash-back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at office supply stores and on internet, cable and phone services each account anniversary year
  • 2% cash-back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at gas stations and restaurants each account anniversary year
  • 1% cash-back on all other purchases

Your return on spending could be around 10% if you convert your 5%, 2%, and 1% cash-back to 5x, 2x, and 1x Ultimate Rewards points, respectively! To do that, you’ll need an Ultimate Rewards credit card like the Ink Business Preferred card.

So if you happen to spend a lot of money on furniture purchased at office supply stores, then this card would be the best option for you. As the icing on the cake, you’ll even get a 0% introductory APR promotion! Regular APR, as shown above, will apply after the introductory period.

Other perks consist of primary rental car coverage when renting for business, purchase protection, extended warranty, roadside dispatch, and no-cost employee cards.

Final Thoughts

Furniture is probably one of the largest purchases you will make — these purchases may not come around often, but when they do, you can expect them to be very hefty.

These purchases are some of those big-ticket items where it just makes so much sense to put them on a credit card. You’ll get tons of rewards by doing so!

In most situations, you’ll want to get a credit card that offers the best rewards on everyday purchases. In addition, be sure to check that these cards have solid purchase protection and offer high credit limits.

A 0% introductory APR period can be an attractive bonus to help you avoid interest fees, as well as using a card that offers big rewards for shopping at home improvement stores (assuming you’re purchasing at a store that’s classified as a home improvement store).

Regardless, we hope you enjoyed our favorite credit cards to use for your next big furniture purchase!
