Capital One and Citi are 2 large financial institutions in the U.S. Both offer standard banking products, including checking and savings accounts, as well as a variety of credit cards.

For a period of time, it looked like Citi was shrinking in the credit card market relative to its heyday while Capital One continued to grow. However, after a credit-card revival from Citi, both issuers offer compelling products worthy of consideration.

But which issuer offers the best product for you?

This guide will look at specific credit card categories and name the 2 best products available in each. Of course, there is also a comparison between the reward currencies you can earn with cards from each issuer.

Comparing Capital One Miles and Citi ThankYou Points

Capital One’s proprietary rewards program is called Capital One Miles, and the miles you earn and redeem are Capital One miles.

Citi’s proprietary rewards program is called Citi ThankYou, and the points you earn and redeem are Citi ThankYou Points.

Currently, Citi has a small portfolio of credit cards that participate in ThankYou, while Capital One’s portfolio is slightly larger.

Capital One miles can be redeemed in these ways:

Citi ThankYou Points can be redeemed as follows:

Capital One miles and Citi ThankYou Points share similar redemption pathways, but you almost always want to avoid redemptions for PayPal, Amazon.com, online shopping, and cash-back, as these yield the lowest redemption values. You often get less than 1 cent per point through these redemptions.

Specifically, Capital One miles are worth:

  • Up to 10 cents per mile when transferred to travel partners
  • 1 cent per mile on statement credit travel redemptions
  • 1 cent per mile on Capital One Travel bookings
  • 1 cent per mile on Amazon.com
  • 0.8 cents per mile on PayPal
  • 0.5 to 1 cent per mile for gift cards

On the other hand, Citi ThankYou Points are worth:

  • Up to 10 cents per point when transferred to travel partners
  • 1 cent per point on Citi Travel with Booking.com bookings
  • Around 1 cent per point for gift cards
  • 0.83 cents per point for online shopping through Shop with Points
  • 0.8 cents per point on Amazon.com
  • 0.5 to 1 cent per point for cash-back

Transfer Partnerships

To get maximum value from your Capital One miles or Citi ThankYou Points, pay attention to each program’s transfer partners.

Each program allows you to transfer the rewards earned from your eligible credit card to airline or hotel loyalty programs. Your credit card points become airline points or miles or hotel points, and then you can book travel directly with whichever provider you transfer to. This allows you to book incredible experiences, including Air France business class, Emirates business class, and much more, at far better rates.

There’s a set of transfer partners that Capital One and Citi share, which you can see in the table below:

Capital One offers a couple of useful partnerships beyond what Citi offers:

Citi, meanwhile, transfers to American Airlines AAdvantage, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, and Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus.

Overall, we believe Capital One has a slight edge over Citi simply because of the value of Air Canada Aeroplan and The British Airways Club as frequent-flyer programs. As such, we value Capital One miles at 1.8 cents and Citi ThankYou Points at 1.6 cents apiece.

Still, Citi’s transfer ratio with Choice Privileges of 1:1.5 allows savvy travelers to book Preferred Hotels for terrific value.

Bottom Line: Capital One miles are slightly more valuable than Citi ThankYou Points, thanks to partnerships with The British Airways Club and Air Canada Aeroplan. However, Citi can be more beneficial for booking hotel stays, thanks to a 1:1.5 transfer partnership with Choice Privileges.

Capital One Miles

The Capital One Venture card has been around for many years. Over time, its benefits and rewards have evolved, and it earns up to 5x Capital One miles today:

  • 5x miles on hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars booked via Capital One Travel
  • 2x miles on all other purchases

As we mentioned earlier, Capital One miles are worth 1.8 cents per mile, translating to a maximum return on spending of 9%. You’ll also find that the Capital One Venture card earns at least 2x miles on purchases, meaning a minimum return on spending of 3.6%.

The Capital One Venture card also includes a handful of useful travel benefits:

Bottom Line: The Citi Strata Premier card and the Capital One Venture card are 2 credit cards always competing for market share in the travel rewards segment. We believe the Citi Strata Premier card outranks the Capital One Venture card because of its impressive list of bonus categories. But the latter can hold its own, especially with its travel benefits beyond rewards.

Why We Like This Card

The Citi Double Cash® Card has long been one of the top cash-back credit cards on the market, and the card now has the ability to earn Citi ThankYou Points!

This means that cardholders of the Double Cash card will now earn 2% on every purchase with unlimited 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for those purchases. Cash back is earned in the form of ThankYou Points. This means each billing cycle, you will earn 1 ThankYou point per $1 spent on purchases and an additional ThankYou point for every $1 paid on your purchase balance as long as there is a corresponding balance in your Purchase Tracker.

Citi has turned the Double Cash card into a top choice for those who are looking for an everyday, no-fuss credit card.

Pros & Cons
Pros
  • Uncapped 2% for every $1 spent (1% when you buy and another 1% when you pay)
  • Flexible redemption options
  • No annual fee
Cons
  • No bonus categories
  • 3% foreign transaction fees
Card Highlights
  • Earn $200 cash back after you spend $1,500 on purchases in the first 6 months of account opening. This bonus offer will be fulfilled as 20,000 ThankYou® Points, which can be redeemed for $200 cash back.

  • Balance Transfers do not earn cash back. Intro APR does not apply to purchases.
  • If you transfer a balance, interest will be charged on your purchases unless you pay your entire balance (including balance transfers) by the due date each month.
  • There is an intro balance transfer fee of 3% of each transfer (minimum $5) completed within the first 4 months of account opening. After that, your fee will be 5% of each transfer (minimum $5).

Citi ThankYou Rewards

The Double Cash card represents perhaps the most complete embodiment of the cash-back, low-fee credit card product.

It even offers a 0% intro APR on balance transfers for 18 months. After that, the variable APR will be 18.24% to 28.49%. and may even provide additional cash-back offer as part of its welcome offer.

The Double Cash card earns 2% cash-back on all purchases: 1% when you buy and 1% when you pay.

Just remember that even though the Double Cash card’s rewards are ThankYou Points, transfers to airline and hotel partners occur at a reduced ratio compared to the premium cards such as the Citi Strata Premier card and Citi Strata Elite card.

However, you can pool points from multiple ThankYou Points-earning cards. For example, if you also hold the Citi Strata Premier card, your 2% cash-back is effectively convertible to 2x ThankYou Points, which is equivalent to a 3.2% return on spending.

Otherwise, you can use your ThankYou Points for a fixed value via cash-back, gift cards, or direct deposit.

This credit card also offers access to Citi Entertainment, fraud protection, and authorized user cards for no additional fee.
